Opera 7.51 - Two Thumbs Up!

Been using Opera's browser over the weekend and I highly recommend trying it out if you'd like a solid, feature packed, speedier and safer alternative to IE.

I keep finding more and more features on this thing. Its simply amazing how well thought out this software is and so far not a single glitch with it.

zzgundamnzz 06-27-2004 08:17 PM

Im so used to IE that browsing with anything else would be uncomfortable...

Opera looks nice though :thumbsup

Digipimp 06-27-2004 08:17 PM

it's all about Safari!

SureFire 06-27-2004 08:20 PM

Faster than IE and Netscape with the banner ads (free version) but how to tell the masses to use this browser? :)

Linguist 06-27-2004 08:21 PM

I've been saying good things about Opera for a long time now... it kicks some serious ass, and is definitely better than IE

They have an affiliate program. :Graucho

I paid for mine within a couple hours of trying it out it was that good.

riosluts 06-27-2004 08:22 PM

does Opera have any kind of form filling add-on? I would really need that feature

I tried that also. Opera is the speed demon of the 3 of them from the tests I did with it. And way more features that are actually useable and practical to increase your surfing speed and productivity.

Nice, I will check it out. Fortunately there is many extensions that make firefox a lot more productive as well.

Yes.

The features are listed here and there are even more beyond what's on this list.

Yes, it does.

By the way, I find that the people who are reluctant to use Opera often seem to dismiss it because of the dominant tool areas that leaves little room for the actual websites. What they don't realize is that you can edit/change/remove all of Operas areas easily, you can even make it give more space to websites than IE.

Evil1 06-27-2004 08:26 PM

been using it 6 months, spyware/popup free the whole goddamn time. fuck ie!

KRL, glad you paid. I don't mind the banner ads. I doubt if the averge Joe would pay for a browser. JMO :)

I tired opera for a while... but it suddenly started crashing. Now I'm using firefox and it works just fine :)

Tempest 06-27-2004 09:23 PM

Finally broke down and installed it based on all your comments. So far I'm liking it. But I've noticed that I need to tighten up some of my pages some more. They looked/worked fine for IE and netscape but there's a few minor things with Opera. Some of my damn hahahahahahahahahaha isn't working either. *sigh*.. I wish they'd all just agree on some standards and then follow them.

Tuga 06-27-2004 09:30 PM

I went with Opera months ago and never looked back :thumbsup

It's frustrating when all browser can't agree on a standard but the truth is IE uses their own methods that arent even fully web compliant. Lots of shit other browsers can even read. General rule of thumb, if it looks bad in any browser, start recoding your page.

Doctor Dre 06-27-2004 09:44 PM

I tried it . I like firefox better

can even read = can't even read

tedwinters 06-27-2004 09:47 PM

I love the image zoom in opera :)
zoom 1000% into a webpage..
unfortunately, firefox only enlarges the text so far..
there is an image zoom plugin for firefox that doesn't work properly in the newest release, and still isn't as slick :)

also prefer the keybrowsing in opera..
'z' to go back a page, 'x' to go forward.. etc..

buzzard 06-27-2004 09:50 PM

Opera has never handled JS well, mozilla/netscape do not handle iframes well.

The best alternative to IE is K-meleon.
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

Very light weight and customizable.
It will not handle multiple heavy graphics pages as well as IE, but renders as good as any Gecko based browser.

Lane 06-27-2004 09:56 PM

Opera sucks with JS.

I have built some j avascript intensive scripts, it worked well with IE and Mozilla derivatives, but I couldn't get it to work with Opera. It doesn't seem to follow w3 standards very well.

Yep. Netscape isn't much better than IE though. I always make sure my pages look good and work in both IE and netscape. But now there's so many choices it's going to get harder and harder.

Anyone tried/use the AvantBrowser? It's showing up 3rd or 4th in some of my stats.

QualityMpegs 06-27-2004 10:00 PM

Just installed and started using FireFox...thanks for the tip guys. Fuck IE!

serious 06-27-2004 10:00 PM

i keep ending up back on ie, probably just because i am so used to it, and want to see pagerank on all the sites i am on.

i switch on and off with firefox though, its pretty good

Yeah I'm starting to notice that the more I use it. But then again coding for netscape and IE has always been a pain in the ass as well.

I haven't used Mozilla in a while.. since like version 6. Was a decent browser but it would fuck up a lot of websites, so I was always having to load up IE too.

Now I use Firefox. :)

ok - so tell me how to get rid of the crap to the right of the URL bar. I want to eitehr get rid of the google search box and the other buttons to the right of the addy bar.

I am one of thise who like the buttons to be as small as possible and have my addy bar as long as possible (I like to see the FUL URL of the page, image I am on).

One of the main things I do not like on opera is that it underlines shit that is not supposed to be underlined - like it does not care if the page says not to underline links. That shit bugs me very much...

I have Firefox too. Works well. I'm just taking a liking to Opera the most so far. It seems to be the fastest.

Vitasoy 06-27-2004 11:13 PM

I better upgrade... :)

I love this fucking browser. I have downloaded a few cool themes for it and I'm very impressed.

Also, I have a friend who has a laptop and an earthlink dial-up account. He uses dialup because he travels a lot and can get dial-up access anywhere. I installed FireFox into his computer and he and I both were blown away with how fast he is now able to surf - it's perfect for those who are still using dial-up.

Good tip thanks, I am gonna put it on the laptop.

There is always a situation where a broadband or wireless connection isn't accessable. :thumbsup

Opera doesn't support ActiveX or Vbscript which is how a lot of this shit gets in.

pr0 06-29-2004 10:22 PM

Firefox doesn't have banner ads on the free version. So i'll stick with it.
