I mean, we are in pretty sorry shape right now if you ask me. I love my country just like anyone else would but our leaders make us look like fucking assholes.

I think there are plenty of platforms that would rival the Democrats and the Republicans for most people but most people haven't heard of them or feel that a vote for such a party is a wasted vote.
I agree with Polish Aristocrat that one of the main causes of a two party political system is money. Having a long history and and large political bases which don't change too rapidly also has a lot to do with it.
I don't agree with you that there is anything which has to be "fixed"? The problems of today are less than in many times in the past. We are not faced with the confrontational issue of slavery, the Civil War or Reconstruction, we don't face a depression, we don't have civil rights riots like in the 1960s and the Cold War standoff with nuclear war as the great fear hanging over the nation is gone. All in all, compared to most times, these ones are pretty good.
There is one positive side to a two party
system. The majority of the people (well, really the majority of the states) will have their final choice for president reach office. So voting tends to look like 55-44 instead of 38-32-30 which may add an element of stability.
