add this line to apache httpd.conf

AddHandler server-parsed .html
AddHandler server-parsed .htm

or whatever else you want it to parse

ssi is a server function, shtml is just a web page extension, you can use ssi with any extension which is the ssi main benifit! plus security benifits etc, shtm is simpler to setup!
