I think I'll be ready for Doom 3 and Half Life 2

Here's my new computer system :)

Abit AV8 Motherboard (NEW socket 939)
AMD FX-53 processor (NEW socket 939)
2-gigs PC3200 Corsair XMS Extreme Memory (Cas Latency: 2-2-2-5)
ATI Radeon X800XT Video Card
Soundblaster Audigy ZS
10K rpm 146-gig Seagate Cheetah HD
Thermaltake Xaser III case
Klipsch 5.1 Pro-Media speakers
Viewsonic VP201b monitor

I was gonna go for the new P4 processor with DDR2 and the PCI-Express slots, but from what I've been reading in the initial reviews, they say that the P4s pretty much get blown away by the AMD FX-53 in gaming, the current DDR2 ram has higher latencies, thus it's about the same speed as today's low latency DDR ram, and lastly, they say that it's gonna be a good year before any games come out that'll take advantage of PCI-Express, so the AGP card will pretty much match a PCI-Express cards until then. I'll just wait until then and get the next generation video card and buy a new AMD board that has PCI-Express and I'll be golden once again :)

Anybody remember gering up for the next Duke Nukem ?

Sounds like one mofo of a machine though.

Im getting pretty tired of reading gaming mags telling me how great the review/interview copy they got of Doom3 or HL2 was though. Im starting to think about impaling myself on my joystick.

Reak 06-25-2004 05:55 AM

We need a pic :glugglug

ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition

At a glance

Editors' rating: 9.0 Excellent

User rating: 100% 0% from 4 users

The good: Fastest available graphics

performance; low power requirements; uses only a single expansion slot.

The bad: Expensive.

The bottom line: Unequivocally the most powerful graphics card on the market, ATI's Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition hands Nvidia's new card a stunning defeat.

blazin 06-25-2004 06:17 AM

Try playing Far Cry in the meantime - that should stretch your hardware :thumbsup

hova 06-25-2004 06:19 AM

Thanks for all of the comments everyone, I appreciate them :thumbsup

As far as the questions about why I didn't wait to build my system. I could've waited, but I've been wanting to get a new system for a while now and figure that with what I bought, there's not gonna be anything to top it for a few months. Like I say, I did my research :)

AMD just released their 939 socket this month, so it's brand spankin' new, plus ATI released their x800xt video card which is definately the top card on the market rite now. There's nothing coming out until late this year or more than likely the first quarter of next year that'll be able to top it. Considering those facts, I figured that now was the time to jump. I was gonna wait until more PCI-Express reviews came up, but looking at a lot of the respectable sites out there that already put out their reviews, they're saying that with today's games, it's not gonna show much improvement, even on games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 because they're not designed to take advantage of PCI-Express.

ZaHa, nope man, sorry, I won't be making it down to Florida this year. I gotta work on making it down there one of these times. It'd be nice to meet everyone.

Blazin, good call, I bought that game and my kids took it up to their system rite away, so maybe I'll go dig that out and see how she looks :)

Reak, I'll have to see about digging out my camera and getting a shot of it. I'm still installing everything and updating it, there's a LOT of stuff that I had to transfer over. That's the one pain about getting a new system.

As far as release dates go, it looks like they pushed off Doom 3, it was supposed to be released this month, but they pushed it to an August 3rd SHIP and Half-Life 2 is currently sitting at a September 1st SHIP date.

Adultwebware, those Alienware ALX systems are beautiful, I was looking at them myself, but I had the craving to to build the system myself because it seems to have more meaning when you know that you pieced it together yourself, plus it was a lot cheaper to do it my way. However, it would've been nice to have water cooling set up and have them optimize it.

badmrfrosty 06-25-2004 08:33 AM

Too bad you didnt get the GeForce 6800 Ultra, since it does like 30 things that the ati card doesnt.
