WEBAIR - Are these guys for real? HAHAHAHAH

Are these guys for real? This is something I should've been told BEFORE I signed up and transfered my domains over to their servers.

Stupid.

never happened to me

Fukeneh 06-24-2004 09:33 PM

i lease whole servers and they sure kick ass for me. and iv never had to fax shit for root access even, let alone SSH.

however jupiter on the other hand wanted me to fax shit just to pay with credit card, after i had done so numerous times in the past.

i webair!

OFFBEAT 06-24-2004 09:34 PM

I seriously hope this is a joke.

I tar/gziped my sites from my previous host and FTP into webair.

I can't uncompress my web content without SSH! Are these guys retarded?

rdunn404 06-24-2004 09:35 PM

Is this a dedicated server or virtual?

Fabuleux 06-24-2004 09:35 PM

Sounds like they don't know how set configure a safe SSH shell.

that's understandable for credit card processing. but SSH access? give me a break!

StuartD 06-24-2004 09:35 PM

I think this is going to be very amusing.

virtual!

good thing i'm drunk so i can laugh it off! :glugglug

tomorrow might not seem so funny, though.

Linguist 06-24-2004 09:37 PM

You can scan it, and send it in, takes 15 mins for them to activate it. That's less time than its gonna take you to bitch them out

Or you can ask tech support to untar it?

is it virtual or dedicated acct btw?

Edit: I wouldn't even start bitching if its a virtual account. If I were them, I wouldn't want to give SSH access to just anyone either.

Illicit 06-24-2004 09:38 PM

oh they are serious... they did the same thing to me...

I was like, wtf, your not worried about who I am when you charge my credit card every month :321GFY

I realize I can ask them. But since when does anyone ask for SSH access verification. How convinient for them to not have to verify before they charge my credit card.

DNS switch has started propagating throughout the net, and my sites are showing up with a empty "Directory Listing of /"

Ash@phpFX 06-24-2004 09:41 PM

it is a pain in the arse, but if its a vitual account i can understand where they are coming from, someone could easily fuck up a whole server and they would want to know exactly who it is

I don't have a scanner. And even if I did, I wouldn't simply because they didn't inform me of this BEFORE I signed up. I don't want them to have my driver's license.

Linguist 06-24-2004 09:45 PM

good luck with another host then :thumbsup

consider yourself lucky as well as safe!
i never give out ssh w/o prior seing ss#

Spunky 06-24-2004 09:54 PM

Thank the cheater/spammers for making it more difficult.People are just tring to protect themselves

Nembrionic 06-24-2004 10:00 PM

I don't see what the fuss is about?
You're on a virtual account right?

It's quite normal for hosting companies to ask for faxes like this.

Would you like some numbfuck to fuck around on the same server you are one, and screw up without them knowing who it is?
Because that would mean your site would be fucked for some time.

Works both ways.

sreiously? that's extreme.

remind me never to host with you.

quantum-x 06-24-2004 10:01 PM

Sounds more than reasonable to me.

Seriously, any host that gives out SSH access to their boxes without clamped down security is fucking nuts.

Be happy that they DO ask you for it.

Okay, I'll concede to that point. However, is this such an ongoing problem?

This is the first time I've ever run into something like this. And I would've appreciated them telling me about SSH verifcation either BEFORE or AFTER in the signup confirmation email. I would've made proper plans before moving my sites over if I wasn't going to have a certain degree of control.

Platinum/Lantern 06-24-2004 10:05 PM

It's official..
people run to the boards about anything now...

People have procedures in place for a reason..
following protocol is just following protocol:2 cents:

"I'm Platinum Lantern, and I approve this message"

fuzebox 06-24-2004 10:06 PM

I thought it was pretty damn weird when they asked me... But it is a shared box and someone with shell access could do a lot of damage if they wanted.

I just took a pic of my license and visa with my digital camera and emailed it over. Shrug.

Doesn't matter if its an ongoing problem...its better to be safe then sorry. You never know when that one numbnut stumbles across something and ruin your day.

Bottomline...
Webair is a great host

They aren't trying to make you "go out of your way"
they aren't trying to "give you a hard time"
they simply are trying to follow guidelines

Faxing something is very easy...
The time spent in this thread, could have been spent driving to Kinko's or Blockbuster Video and using their fax machine...

just my million cents

Phoenix66 06-24-2004 10:12 PM

What's the big deal with ssh access? When it's properly configurerd you can't even run "dir/ls" command in sections that doesn't belong you....

I would just take a pic and email it over. Its not worth loosing traffic or having your site be down.

Webair is a great host.

OFFBEAT 06-24-2004 10:14 PM

Steve was kind enough to at least get my sites live by ungzip/untar my content until I get SSH access squared away in the morning.

You'd be amazed about how many hosting companies DON'T have their things straight :Oh crap

Well...ongoing problem. Yes. People abuse their access for spam, or sneaking around on other peoples accounts.

But even if it wasn't an ongoing problem: why make it possible in the first place?

I mean...why does a dog lick it's balls? Just because it CAN.
So there's always fuckers that'll fuck around just because they CAN. Sad but true.

But you got the point already :winkwink: :thumbsup

cjnet 06-24-2004 10:26 PM

Nice analogy..

Snake Doctor 06-24-2004 11:05 PM

Not really a big deal unless you're trying to hide your true identity.

Just because they have your credit card and billing info doesn't mean anything. You could have faked that, stolen it, whatever, the same way scammers generate signups to sponsors with fake/stolen card numbers.

If that was the case then whoopie, they'd be out one month's hosting bill, no biggie.
But I can understand them wanting verification of who you are before you get shell access to a server that you have a virtual account on.

On another note, WTF are you doing with a virtual account anyways? Servers are cheap, get your own and then you can do whatever the fuck you want with the box, AND you don't have to worry about some other knucklehead with shell access fucking up your sites.

:2 cents:
