Thumb TGPers. a question

how many thumbs do you consider to be too many thumbs on a thumb TGP?

Tom_PMs 06-24-2004 07:19 PM

Over 15 (or maybe 16) More than that is a free site and should be marketed as such imo.

MrIzzz 06-24-2004 07:21 PM

hmmm, i was expecting someone to say anything over 100 thumbs is too much

David! 06-24-2004 07:22 PM

I uusually have around 90 on my TGP's :2 cents:

I've always used 88*88
But that's what I like...
I have yet to meet someone who has a scientific answer as to why a specific size is better :2 cents:

i was just wondering.

i've seen 88x88 sites have almost 200 thumbs. and i've seen 90x120 do almost the same.

personally i use a different amount of thumbs across all of my TGPs from 50 to 100.

140 on Coed Cherry. 28 per "block". I list 4 days and a hall of fame.

I don't think there's really a such thing as "too much" until you start running into bandwidth issues. You should have a good system for optimizing your thumbs and pages.

The main page on Coed Cherry is php driven .. but a cron job is run once a minute to generate it into a static .shtml page and I have gzip compression enabled in apache so it's serving static compressed pages. Then once a while I download the thumb folder and run the entire thing through XAT Image Optimizer to get all the thumbs down to 3k to 4k max.

The last time I did a heavy optimization I managed to get a 'session' down from 700k total to 500k... but that was before I switched from 88x88 thumbs to 90x120. It's probably smaller now because I have 15 less thumbs and 5 less banners that were 184x184.

I switched Coed Cherry from 88x88 to 90x120 this week and within 48 hours my productivity went from 160% to 220%. It doesn't get any more scientific than that ;)

I tried that and did not see any significant increase or decrease...:2 cents:

lol

i'm just curious as to everyones opinion about how manys thumbs is too much. because some people argue that too many thumbs gives away too much free content to the surfers and i don't agree with that

Tuna 06-24-2004 07:58 PM

i do 30, 60 and 90 on different tgps ofcourse. sizes vary from 88x88 to 90x120.

I think you should not worry about what other people think. Anyways, even if you limit the amount of free thumbs on your site, others will give much more away for free.
I think it is all a question of tweaking and trial and error :2 cents:

90 is enough if you use 90x120.

What matters is HOW you sell it :)
I can whip up a 100k TGP in a week or two with 500 galleries in the database but only 90 shown at a time.

Doesn't the average surfer click between 2 and 3 thumbs? So some click 0 some click 10, but most click what your prod says. Why so many?

Choice. And because bookmarkers are thought to really drive a site. You can rely on bookmarkers to be there and they're generally more productive. So you want to appease them. I know I'm more likely to bookmark a site that has 150 thumbs over one with only 90.

Steve 06-24-2004 09:46 PM

I like to use about 120 - 150 thumbs
seems to work good for me
