Why do so many people say "you know" in every sentence when they talk?

Drives me crazy when I'm having a conversation with someone and they do that incessently.

yeah. the word UMM is the brain choking for oxygen...:)

I have one friend tha literally says you know in every single sentence and she's talks too much as it is.

Yeah, there is many english people who always use the "you know" in their sentences! that's fuckin' annoying!

Sometimes it seems to be the American version of the Canadian "ay".

That seems to get repeated about 30 - 40 times within 3mins by the one's who go on shows like Jerry Springer...

"Like" is MUCH worse up here. It makes everyone sound like an escaped Valley Girl. I am trying to get it out of my own speech, but it's hard! It really is!

"And then I was like, "He said this and all." Like... you know?"

This is so true. Watch that show and you realize how most people can't talk well at all.

I lived with a Valley Girl once. They really do talk like that. She was so adorably cute though so I let it slide.

I know, a Valley Girl transferred into our high school once. She was quite smart, but could snap into the whole hair flipping, gum snapping attitude in an instant.

EVERYONE has something they say a lot.... I never realized it until I finished my radio broadcasting course in college. I came out being much better at picking up speech patterns and manorisms... and I've found that everyone has something that they say or do often.

Most of the time it's just something they pick up here and there... it tends to change from time to time... every couple of years usually.

But even though there's something that a lot of people do that bugs you, chances are there's something that you say or do often in your expressions that happens very often, and others might pick up on. :winkwink:

I was watching TV and those Canadian BMX boys all talked like that you know.
