Bush Claimed to have the Right to Waive Torture Laws

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) claimed the right to waive anti-torture laws and treaties covering prisoners of war after the invasion of Afghanistan (news - web sites), and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized guards to strip detainees and threaten them with dogs, according to documents released Tuesday.

Of course he has the right. I guess since we're the allmighty US we can create the right to do whatever we want. We have the right to hold all the WMD's we want, we have the right to assasinate any political leaders we want, we have the right to invade any country we want for whatever reason... we have the right to ignore the UN, and disregard the world's best interest.

What a great country we live in. :thumbsup

The right to do whateva is more like it....:(

If it was your brother/father/son being decapitated because we couldn't get the info on where he was being held cause we were too busy serving tea and asking a terrorist politely where they were, you would change your attitude :321GFY

Nysus 06-22-2004 05:15 PM

I REALLY hope they get what they should.

Switch the situation - imagine YOU were captured as a suspect in something and then treated how they treated those prisoners? THAT is why there are laws to war and humane treatment required.

Cheers,
Matt

If it was your brother/father/son or YOU having a misile dropped on your neighborhood for no reason other than OIL and PUTTING DOLLARS IN POCKETS, then you might change your attitude on international affairs.

If it was your brother/father/son being held captive without any form of legal justice and/or tortured in American prisons you would change yours to (and become yet another terrorist)

No I wouldn't. No sense in trying to explain you the values of humanity or the basis of morals or anything... so just take my word for it. I wouldn't change my attitude.

KRL 06-22-2004 05:22 PM

It's not a pretty world we live in folks. Bad shit happens everyday. Laws are circumvented. People get fucked up.

This is the planet we've all created. If you don't like what you see get up off your ass and do something to change it.

The people do have the power though you'd never know it.

Terrorist in Iraq ( not iraqis) are beheading collaborators of the US in retaliation of the prisonner abuse in Iraq and Guantanamo bay...

Why do you think they put them in orange jumpsuit similar to those of Guantanamo ....

Get out of there and you will not die. :2 cents:

directfiesta 06-22-2004 05:28 PM

It's more the fact that Bush says he should have the right whereas if another country was to claim the same thing he'd bomb them.

It is a statistical fact that torture does NOT produce quality intelligence so your plea for empathy is offbased.

Very hypothetical case and not one that is likely to be presented in reality. Which "terrorists" are being asked? The people in Cuba or some low rate person in Iraq? They ain't got a clue since it is clear over 80% are not even "terrorists". But odd they are still abused despite this. It's hardly a surprise they despise the US.

When are people in other countries gonna learn, we are americans, we will do what we want, when we want, where we want and how we want, and justify it by whatever means. Resistance is futile

So then stop crying when your soldiers die or civilians are burned, hanged or beheaded...

That is the price to pay to be " americans" ....

as much as a slow death is the price to pay when you have AIDS...

If you are actually serious about that post, first it shows how dumb you are and secondly, you clearly don't know anything about the world outside the US.

Sad, but that attitide is assured to bring loads of problems - but some never learn.

And on June 30th, the exemption for US troops and commanders is void: they could be tried for war crimes in La Haye...

Because yes, americans don't want to be subject to the laws that govern the rest of the civilisation....

Indeed, and I'm sure the world will not let them 'disappear' either. Europe and the rest of the world will stand against Bush and anyone else involved who made the decisions to allow torture. That's one thing no one should tolerate.

Cheers,
Matt

I agree, this one they can't sweep under the rug like Iran/Contra. An administration intentionally violating the geneva convention so horribly will be dealt with appropriately once rational people regain control.

The preamble to all the US war shit was amusing. Denegrate any international org (despite they are part of it), - throw up a load of excuses as to why the International Criminal Court was "not a good thing". The first four excuses did not carry any weight and were laughed at. The fifth "excuse" was "protecting US troops on the battlefield". Noble concept, but one one that had any problem in the ICC since each country has a right to try it's soldiers for violations before there is any mention of the ICC.

This has little to do with "protecting soldiers" - more to do with protecting the asses people like "commanders in chief" and their co-conspirators. From the memos between the DOJ and Whitehouse, it is very clear they were concerned about this and "contriving" an attitude as a defense.

It's a matter of time and the flotsum rises... :winkwink:
