I want my doctor to switch me from generic Prilosec to that new medication Nexium. I didn't go to the doctors yet I have an appointment coming up. Even taking Prilosec twice daily now doesn't stop my constant heartburn and if I drink alchohol.. forget about it.
Do you get heartburn?

Not surgically for awhile anyways.. you see I have crohns disease which is an inflammation of the colon. I have acid reflux disease with that so I take the heartburn medication with other daily medication. I am thankful I am alive though I could have had something life threatening yet without proper treatment things get worse.Originally posted by bluff
if you have heartburn this frequently, is there an underlying anatomical abnormality that can surgically be treated?Comment

I do. This is just new to me in the last year and a half. Prilosec keeps it in check and I keep pepcid, zantac..etc with me all the time. I went to the movies a month ago and had to leave, thought I was having a heart attack. I have to watch what I eat closely. I'm trying to do everything right to keep it from happening.
My uncle just had the surgery 2 weeks ago. He's finally able to eat again and it is better.
I hope your doctor will help you out. It's terrible pain .Comment

Sounds like you have Barrett's Disease.
See a good specialist. They will either give you nexium or
prevacid. Both will stop your heartburn totally. Problem with
over the counter prilosec is its weeker and you don't know
what dosage you should be taking.Comment

I assume you don't know what you're talking about. Barret's esophagus is a 'dysplasia' and a premalignant disease of the mucosa of the last part of the esophagus which develops after profound reflux disease. Thus, one suffering from reflux disease may eventually develop Barret's esophagus, but these two entities aren't synonymousOriginally posted by SaVod

well there is not 'the' surgery as this guy you responded to suggests. There's a few anatomical malformations that may cause the lower sphincter of the esophagus not to work correctly thus not preventing reflux of gastric acid. If surgery is indicated, it will probably be different for each malformation.Originally posted by Jarrod

Try mixing a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda with approx a wine glass of water, make sure you neck it straight back, this will bring up any excess wind, if not try again in 15 mins, this is a much more effective and faster remedy than over the counter ones.http://www.thehungersite.comComment
