How do you fight burnout?

Frankly I am sick of coding. That's about all I do all day, every day. I'm bored with it. It's time for something new. I thought today I might get started on a blog type site I have always wanted to do and then maybe work on a cam portal site.

Then I'll cut out and get some Coronas and perhaps finish off the day by making some hot, sweaty monkey love with the girlfriend. :glugglug

What do you do to combat burnout?

arial 06-18-2004 10:07 AM

Take a day off, I code all day long to and some days it just gets to much where I have to just leave what I'm doing and go for a walk or sit outside or something before I go nuts. Take some time off, coding requires your head to be constanly thinking, and when you code too much you turn into a zombie.

The only way to fight a burnout is by preventing it.
If you feel drained and empty. Bored and reluctant to (go to) work the only real solution is: switch careers and/or take a LOOONNGGGG time off....

Get some timers with alarms and work a "normal" schedule. Start time, *mandatory* break time, *mandatory* lunch time, *mandatory* quitting time.

Sleep a full 8 hours.

I try to keep to a schedule but unfortunately 8 hours of sleep isn't always possible. I have a ton of customers who call me at all hours of the day and night and a hot, high maintenance girlfriend that requires frequent rogerings. Sleep isn't usually a priority for me.

Try doing some sports, even if it's just 2 times a week, it will help alot, physically and mentally.

I code to fight burnout. I used to be a software engineer .. and when I got into adult I started by coding everything myself .. but quickly found I just don't have the time. It doesn't make me money so I ended up by running my sites with poorly developed scripts and switching everything over to paid scripts.

Now if I get burned out working on designs, traffic or galleries etc. I work on my own scripts. No rush to do anything this way .. gives me something new to work on and look forward to .. and my code doesn't get sloppy from being rushed.

I thought I could take a day off too...and I technically am...but I'm still sitting here doing graphics and other design-related crap. Not really much of a day off if you ask me. Oh well, at least there's no coding involved. :thumbsup

dude try going to a doctor, tell him you think you might have add but don't want to go through all the psychiatric bs of being diagnosed and have tried adderall before and it helped you a lot. he might be willing to just write you out a prescription on the spot, mine did.
:thumbsup

I usually give myself one night a week where I go out and let go, but that's getting old now too, however that did work for awhile. Going out to the bar shooting pool drinking.

I would like to know how to fight a burnout as well, I code all day long too. I don't get much time off, even when I'm not at work. Hell I lost vacation time 2 years in a row because we were simply to busy for me to get the time off, sick days forget about it that just means your working from at home, lol. I do get to take about one lunch a week though.

I've taken some time off before, seems to energize me for a bit when I come back, but then it's back to the same thing. I feel your pain but as long as your a programmer in this industry, the only words of advice i have is get used to it. I've been programming for 8 years now, 4 of which were non adult. The no adult programming was pretty stress free and i never really got burnt out, except for the marketing company i worked for.

I've throw my arms up many times, "fuck it I'll work construction, any thing but sit on my ass all day behind a computer and code," but that never goes anywhere.

I know being a programmer it's pretty hard watching everyone else work and get time off around the office, that gets to you after awhile as well.

Magg 06-18-2004 02:47 PM

Dont push down the accelerator as hard as you do and you wont burn out as much.

woodsix 06-18-2004 02:59 PM

Yeah, when you are going at a high-level, you are going to burn-out at some point.

It is almost like a high-speed race car as opposed to your everyday family sedan. Those race cars burn out engines after every race but the family sedan lasts years and years.

The more intense your work, the quicker you will burn-out.

That is why you have the sabbatical. Take some time off and recharge your engine.
