DNS how long does it take, 2 places at once??
 

I am switching my site oddogg.com (don't click there, it is a bunch of little sites, and all that is is an ad) from my old host, to my new host.

Now I have changed one of my little sites, and I have the new version on the new host, I figure once I click and see the new version, I'm off the old host.

this is the site I'm talking about here it is old host http://www.oddogg.com/fetish
and new host http://195.39.48.162/oddogg.com/fetish


WELL, I was checking my stats on the new host, and some of the sites I uploade for Oddogg are showing up in the stats...but when I type in the link and go to the site, it is still on the old host! (I do a refresh, so that isn't the problem)

I thought there was one big DNS table, I guess there are different ones...can my site actually be in two places at once???

The DNS records need to be updated in your ISP's central database so that you (and everyone else) gets pointed to the proper site.

My last DNS update took about 3 days to reach my ISP

Try deleting it off the old sites. Make sure the new and old host have their dns pointers right. We usually have the old host do a repoint to the new host to make sure it all switches over quicker too

The old host did the DNS pointing for me yesterday...still not showing up. I hate to delete the stuff off the old, becuase I don't want to get blacklisted anywhere because my URL is suddenly file not found.

I was just suprised that it could show up in two places.

(I have about 30 small sites on that name)

Web Mistress...

Some big ISPs, and even some smaller ones, cache their DNS, meaning, they only update their dns record on a certain periodic rate.

24-72 hours is about how long it take for a dns change or a new domain to "propogate" through the web...

Is why it's REALLY a good idea NOT to let your old ISPs know you're moving your site, until it's been up on the NEW ISP for a couple days... http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif

My ISP, Adelphia Cable, is pulling your site from your NEW dns... just fyi.... it's a trickle-down thing. Don't worry... everyone will see it correctly before the weekend.

I just had a problem with binanca hotlinking, and I couldn't figure out how they were getting to my new site, when I still saw the old site. LOL.

I see what you mean...I have Prodigy, and when I access that site, I see the old site,

BUT when I log onto Juno, I see the new site. Go figure, I guess Prodigy doesn't update their DNS tables as often as free Juno does!

Gemini, they did it for me...my old host was really nice. They are geared more towards business sites, and agreed I was better elswhere for my adult stuff (still have my business site there) I am going to just have them cancel the old account, now that I know it will all resolve within a day or so.

Yeah its a real treat to have to figure out stuff when moving. We have to move client sites alot since they always get these 'great deals'. lol That cache thing can really screw with your head. I understand it yet it still makes no sense after 7 yrs of online work. Sort of like if you really try to comprehend the whole Universe with us just being one small bit can really boggle you. We never tell old hosts we're moving a site either. First you want to make sure you copy off a new fresh copy of the site/s to put up on the new host. Swap it, wait a few days and then delete your content from the old host. 3 days is usally workable.

Thats if ppl have their browsers set to always seek new. I think the default on most browsers is every few days tho. I learned that one in 94 when a friend kept telling us about a sale he had on his site and the browser kept showing the same old stuff. Emptying temps and defragging besides the browser settings are really important in this biz. Go Norton! lol
