dog question
 

our cocker spanel is 12 years old. and as you may know in history a lot of cockers get really bad ear infections when they get older. i dont know how many of you on here have cocker spaniels and have had this problem, or can help me out with this situation. but with the ear infection it just absolutely smells bad. like a foul smell. we have seen the vet lots of times we give her the medication it just keeps coming back. want to know if any cocker owners have experienced this problem what they have done. any other remedies other solutions?

have you tried giving him antibiotic?? and use iodine solutions (topical) swab it inside his inner ears, everyday. :winkwink:

Dont quote me on this but I remember something about getting a weakly sprung peg or similar [so as not to inflict pain] and using it to hold the dogs ears behind its head allowing air flow inside the canal. The longer you can keep the ears back the better off the dog will be.

Basically the combination of ears being flopped down all the time, a bit of dirt and the fact that cockers LOVE water; everything inside the ear canal gets festy and creates the smell.

You might ask you vet to consider 'pulse' treatments in which you regularly give the dog treatments for the infection (antibiotics and ear drops) even if the dog doesn't show signs of infection.

I have an older cat that is prone to respiratory infections. He gets 10 days of antibiotics every month to help prevent them.

sometimes they have mites who can cause this ear infections. Ask your vet about that. Usually they at first need antibiotics to get rid of the infection and then a special medicine to kill the mites.

As a natural and herbal solution, have you ever thought about trying tea tree oil? You can buy it at the local pharmacy and you swab the inside of the ear with a qtip, or drop some into the ear with a dropper? I dont know if it works for dogs, but since I dont take perscriptions, i use tea tree oil all the time. Its a natural antibiotic.

I used to have a cocker spaniel and she got bad ear infections.

I mixed a concoction of white vinegar, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with distilled water.

Then, I took q tips and cleaned her ears every single day.

It stopped the infections.

Our vet told us the ear infections are basiclly a yeast infection. He gave us a topical solution that was about the same thing as Ravens mix. Now after every bath Tonda cleans her ears with it.
