Have any of your hosting experts ever seen this?

I saw that once... well, not sure if they were the same exact characthers :P and it was because Apache didn't recompile correctly after cPanel's nightly "update". I've seen this addressed on Cpanel's forums so you should look there.

Things like this make me glad I'm fully managed now...
