How long before you quit the gym?

Its obvious that most people who join gyms do not go for long, I was speaking with a manager at the local gym and he said they have 3200 members and active 220 who have been active for over 60 days, that means they showed up twice a week every week for the past 2 months, they have a card system so he can track every detail.

How long before you said fuck
it?

Do you think you said fuck it because you got lazy or because you expected to see changes fast and you didnt?

Just curious

Gasper 06-14-2004 05:39 AM

My top was 3 months or so .. but now I'm rather doing some exercies at home :2 cents:

Roald 06-14-2004 05:44 AM

2 times a week for 4 months already :thumbsup

But I can see what you mean, at my gym you have to cancel 2 months in advance (3 month payments) and I can imagine they make the most out of those forgotten cancelations ;)

I said fuck it after 4 months. Then I tried again later, and said fuck it after a week lol.

Juicy D. Links 06-14-2004 05:47 AM

5 times a week since October
This is my 8th attempt, but after reaching 250lb and not being able to go up to 3 flight of stairs, I said "Fuck this shit!!!"
So, this time I will not quit :2 cents:

I have a gym directly across the street from me and I do nothing all day, so I really have no excuses, but Im lazy.

Also I dont know what to do at the gym, so I just stand there like an asshole and look at other people and copy what they do. Like I dont know like how your supposed to lift the weights and how youre supposed to do things, so I just dont go.

gornyhuy 06-14-2004 06:05 AM

Recently I've been working like 16 hour days all told... no time. :(

AnalProbe 06-14-2004 06:06 AM

How about setting up a "Porn Gym" franchise ?

Content shooters gain content, webmasters lose weight.

Models will have godlike bodies.

ADL Colin 06-14-2004 06:09 AM

I started lifting and doing cardio over a year ago and do it a minimum of 5 days a week. The longest stretch I've missed is 4 days because of travel. When I travel, I always work out the first day back. I think the more heavy your commitment the less likely you are to break it. I've created many rules for myself to keep myself from falling into the quitting trap.

Oh, and I'm down 50 pounds :-)

Tera 06-14-2004 06:14 AM

I went for 6 months 3-4 times a week, now I am starting up again.

It's been two weeks, hopefully I can keep it up

Royal Cash 06-14-2004 06:40 AM

do it over 1 year and not planning to stop

it helps me keep good health doing our hard work:))

ocho-ocho 06-14-2004 06:51 AM

after a year.... i stopped, busy!

Vic Lagina 06-14-2004 06:58 AM

It's hard to stick with it initially, but I have been going solidly for 8 years now, and was working out prior to that.

Right now it's 4 times a week, and has been that way for a long time.

I think if anyone can put the time in for a year, then chances are they will stick with it for as long as they want to.

Extreme Nate 06-14-2004 07:23 AM

I made it for 2 months and that was 8 months ago and Im still paying for it, LOL I suck

benc 06-14-2004 07:29 AM

After a month or so most people get sick of it, or it starts getting cold and don't feel like going out as much. Then keep the membership active because of thoughts of maybe going again, or too lazy to cancel.

Kinda like porn memberships. Just keeps reccurring. I think I had about 10 months of recurring charges (while not going) before I finnaly decided I wasnt gonna go again and canceled.

mindoza 06-14-2004 07:45 AM

I Joined a gym three months ago with my dad and sister..both of them are in good shape..they drag me there. Left on my own I would not go. I do not go as much as I should but I go.

chodadog 06-14-2004 07:45 AM

That's where gyms make their money. They offer you a seemingly fantastic deal on a yearly membership compared to the prices of a pay by the month deal. They do this, because they know that the vast majority of gym goers will give in after 2 months. So basically, they're making 6 months worth of membership costs in 2 months. And the system never fails.

I've been going for a little over a month now, 5 times per week. I'm going to keep it up because i feel better, although i haven't seen any visual gains, i am stronger and i feel better throughout the day.

I think the major reason people quit is because they have completely unrealistic goals. They expect to be lean and mean after 6 weeks, and most people don't even adjust their diet when they join a gym. And we all know that diet is just as important as the working out.

MattO 06-14-2004 07:56 AM

When I was living in NYC I had a year membership for the Crunch gym that was less than a block away...
I think I went twice.
Drunk.

Peter Romero 06-14-2004 08:02 AM

I stay until all the skirts have my biz card.

Then I join another gym...

repeat marketing plan...

Join another gym...

visit the first gym, sleaze around some more...

etc... etc... etc...

market4s 06-14-2004 08:02 AM

been going for years... why stop??? keeps you healthy and looking great!:glugglug

Blaze 06-14-2004 08:07 AM

6 days a week in the gym for the past 3 years and still going strong.

Jer 06-14-2004 08:10 AM

I paid 6 months in advance, "won" more 6 months. I went two weeks, then after 10 months I went one day. Damn. :(

Ic3m4nZ 06-14-2004 08:18 AM

5 days a week since almost 3 years I started once I got 16.

It is proven that at least 50% of people who starts going to the gym give up in less than 3 months and those stats doesn't lie.

Martin 06-14-2004 08:19 AM

3 times a week for the last year. I'll be going till I'm too old to go. I have too.

working out is like getting into online porn. so much promise of greatness and then people find out its actually hard work that requires dedication and they quit.

And thats another thing. Trainers are like $50 an hour. So if you want one twice a week that's $400/month. And with the cost of the gym membership, I could buy a new car for that. and I dont want to sign up for a whole year.

If a gym came out with a 2 month Fasttrack workout plan, where you get to go in and have the trainer beat the shit out of you working you out and then at the end of 2 months you look much hotter, then I'd sign up. But I'm not going to waste 6 months floating around a gym feeling stupid and seeling little improvement.

Thats why they have these "Slim in 6" and "Power 90" infomercials, because people just want to cut to the chase and want a pro to just tell them what to do to get results really fast.

kmanrox 06-14-2004 09:22 AM

i've always gone for as long as i can remember... yes there are times where i go thru a couple month layoffs cuz i get busy or lazy... but i always get back into it... it's proven that physical fitness helps entrepreneurs and business persons in many ways (hardvard business review magazine i read on a plane haha)

Lucy 06-14-2004 09:27 AM

I've been visiting gym three times per week last three months already...:thumbsup
I like it, but now is getting pretty hot here and I prefer roller-blade outside than go to the gym...:thumbsup

Nothing is more valuable than your health. A car wont lower your HR or cholesterol level.

loverboy 06-14-2004 09:35 AM

work totally eat lots of my time. used to go to the school gym 5 times a week, but after getting a full-time job is a different story.. just got lazy

cherrylula 06-14-2004 09:45 AM

Everytime I check out a new gym and consider joining I get creeped out cause they are all meat markets.

Last tour I took of a facility I have images of fat people sweating and lounging naked in a sauna room burned in my head. :1orglaugh
