GRAHAM THORPE'S superb century led England to an incredible 3-0 series whitewash of New Zealand.

The Surrey all-rounder hit a magnificent unbeaten 104 to guide Michael Vaughan's side to a four-wicket win at Old Trafford.

Thorpe shared in a crucial unbroken stand of 70 with Ashley Giles for the seventh wicket.

The much-maligned off-spinner again showed his value to England with the bat, making 36 not out to add to his unbeaten 45 in the first innings.

For much of the day it looked as though England would fall short of the victory target of 284, even after running through the Black Caps lower order in the morning.

New Zealand had started the day on 190 for 5, but lost their last five wickets for just 28.

Steve Harmison made the first breakthrough when he trapped Craig McMillan for 30.

Harmy removed Jacob Oram for a duck two overs later for his third wicket of the innings.

Andrew Flintoff also took his third, getting James Franklin to edge to Geraint Jones.

But Giles was surprisingly the pick of the bowlers, removing Kyle Mills and Chris Martin to finish with 4-46.

England's reply started disastrously and they were reeling at 16-2 with both openers Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss back in the hutch.

Michael Vaughan did not last long either, and when he went for 10 it looked all over.

Mark Butcher shared a stand of 88 with Thorpe for the fourth wicket but he was trapped lbw by the inspirational Chris Cairns for 59.

Andrew Flintoff went quickly before gritty Geraint Jones again gave England fans hope of an unlikely victory.

When he went for 27 England still needed 70 to win with only the tail to keep Thorpe company.

But Giles hung around and batted superbly while the majestic Thorpe did the rest at the other end.
