Cheap rackmount equipment holders....
 

I have a bunch of 1U and 2U servers piling up here and I'm sick of having to shuffle them around while I work on them. I don't have a rack at the house so they are just piled on each other.

Sooo I was wandering around here trying to find something I could make a makeshift "rack" out of & I found a couple of these in the garage:

Rectangular milk crates :thumbsup

...and you can saw out slots for your 1U and 2U equipment because of the way the milk crates are made.

I feel like geek version of Martha Stewart over here.

I just found 2 more & it looks like if I stack them 2 crates deep I can make it so extra long servers have rear support rails.

you could build one easily out of some 2x4 boards and some angle iron. If you're good with tools, and painted it, it probably wouldnt look bad either. Would look better than milk crates?

Yeah I really need to get a half-rack off ebay for my house ASAP. I've been wanting to get one but every time I find one, they want likes $200 for shipping.

We have a surplus outlet for the state around the corner & they have full racks all the time for like $25. I've sort of been waiting for a 1/2 rack to pop up over there.

Anyway, I had to have something *right now* so I can get these boxes setup, networked & benchmarked...
