Car got stolen last Fri nite!

I posted this on a BMW M3 board, and figured i'd share the story here to.

I live in central NJ and I only had my M3 for 8 months.

This Friday I was sick in bed with a fever. Around 3AM I heard what sounded like a tow truck outside my apartment. Diesel engine and chains, but i was too tired and sick to get up and look. Last thing I was thinking that it could have been my car.

I slept in until past noon and woke up feeling a bit better. I was going to go to the mall and when I went outside the car was missing. I imediately called the cops and they responded.

Tuesday at 6:30 am i got a call that the car was recovered and totaled.

I went to go see it in East Orange, NJ. About 45 miles away and a BAD AREA to be in. The Car was totaled in my opinion. This is what appears to have happened. The car was towed out of my development. (i'm guessing cause i heard a tow truck at 3 am, maybe or maybe not) They took a screw driver and pushed in the lock all the way. (The guy at the pound says you can push a lock in on a bmw and wiggle the screwdriver around until it hits a contact, it thinks it's the key and opens the locks.) They then went thru the car and found my vallet key in the owners binder in the glove box. And went joy riding. They had it all day Sat and Sun and then Monday nite crashed it. It appears they went thru wooden pole of a "L" shaped street lamp, then into a chain link fence, skidded along the fence and cracked and knocked over a utility pole on the other side of the fence, and then came off the fence into a tree. The SOB got outta the car and ran, He left the screwdriver he busted in with, his hat, and his keys behind.

Here is a link to pics i took of the car in the pound and the accident scene.

Insurance is going to pay off the lease, but it looks like i'm going to be out $7600+ dollars on what i put down and this months payment. I don't even have the final word that this is a totaled car in the insurance eyes, but i can't see them fixing this. Look at the 2nd pic to see what he did to the rim, the frame has to be way off wack.

Maybe i'm the only idiot out there, but take you vallet keys out of your cars if you have them there.

Here are the pics: http://www.officebuildings.com/m3

thats nasty man, i feel sorry for ya, it was a beauftiful car

stevo 06-10-2004 09:54 PM

Damn... Whats the point of stealing a car just for a 2 day joy ride?

Spunky 06-10-2004 09:56 PM

Yep .. a write off... that sucks man.

bringer 06-10-2004 09:56 PM

any leads? if they find him, beat $7600 out of him

hyper 06-10-2004 09:56 PM

hmm your insurance company has to pay retail value for the car, not just pay off the lease.

any extra between the lease payoff and retail value is yours to keep.

i would negotiate a payoff price with the BMW dealer lower than retail value and use the difference to lease a new one ;)

Cloner 06-10-2004 09:57 PM

Damn man, that sucks ass. Sorry to hear it.

Sosa 06-10-2004 10:14 PM

that really sucks. I hope everything works out in the end for ya.

ModelPerfect 06-10-2004 10:14 PM

So the thieves stole your car with a big-ass, noisy, conspicuous tow truck, rather than popping the lock at the scene?!? That doesn't sound logical... But sorry to hear about your loss. Don't let the insurance company get away with just paying off the lease: they will screw you if you let them. You should get the price of a comparable M3.

iwantchixx 06-10-2004 10:21 PM

don't let the insurance company fuck you. get them to cover lease + what you put down on it already

ModelPerfect 06-10-2004 10:24 PM

They won't do that, because they will argue the car has depreciated in value, and they can only cover the current value of the car. That's why he needs to find out what a same year M3 with the same options and mileage is retailing for: that will be the price he should get.

riosluts 06-10-2004 10:31 PM

damn that is such a nice car. And the rim sure looks totally raped. Sorry for your lose man

sweet7 06-10-2004 10:44 PM

doesn't look like the airbags went off, and the car is fuckin' ruined!

the wheels totally broken like that means a really hard impact that really sucks man sorry to hear that.

Theo 06-10-2004 10:48 PM

damn,nothing left!

emthree 06-10-2004 10:50 PM

That is horrible, I would cry like a baby if that ever happend to me. (Hope it never does)

What becomes of the wreck, price? :winkwink:

Alright, now you are one of the FEW idiots out there that do that. Common man, keeping a vallet key in the car, the vallet key STARTS the car but doesn't open the trunk or any of that.

:thumbsup Smart move!

thats how u get more than book value..

find 3 of the same exact M3's (year, options, mileage) that retail higher than book.

they must pay replacement value over book value.

Mr. Marks 06-10-2004 11:45 PM

sorry bout that man. :(

Oh, I agree...I'd try to find the highest retail price out there or the highest listed book value.

abyss_al 06-11-2004 02:41 AM

thats some fucked up shit.... and some trippy shit.... i was home sick about four months ago, and they stole my car from infront of my house too... my fully restored 67 chevy impala convirtable was gone.... still not found... i know what you went through... at least yours was recovered..

and i think if the dmamges exceed sixty percent of the cars' value, then they total it out..:2 cents:

liquidmoe 06-11-2004 02:50 AM

Damn that sucks, especially while you are sick. My worst experience with my bmw was taking a nap, had my car parked right outside my house and in broad day light some jackoff decided to use a screwdriver to break the passenger side window and steal my cell and camera. Lesson learned, never leave anything in the car, even during broad day light, but the asshat dented my pillar too.

Get your insurance to cover everything, dont settle for whatever their first estimates are unless they cover everything.

pure energy 06-11-2004 02:56 AM

That ain't nice. Sorry to hear that.

Ross 06-11-2004 03:10 AM

If that was my car, and the insurance company said they fixed it, I wouldn't believe them. I know you're screwed outta almost 8K but would you seriously feel safe drving that thing again??

Sorry to hear about it, sucks big balls. Why can't people just leave other peoples shit alone :(

Im no body shop expert but if the engine is intact and the only real damage is to the front axle, it could be repairable, the rest of that cosmetic stuff is easily fixed. But price is a different question. Although they wouldnt be able to ever get the frame again exactly right as it was before.

you never know what those fuckers did with the car... the engine may be intact now, those assholes probably redlined the fuck out of that car... you wont know til down the line when it starts to burn oil and shit...maybe worst...being a lease, they'll make you pay for all that shit... dont take the car back... have a mechanic inspect the fuck out of it, and your body shop estimate the damages...you have the right to do that... this way you can make sure the damages are enough for them to take it from you...think long run :2 cents:

doober 06-11-2004 03:41 AM

looks like 20k ( 25k if the side airbags went off) in damages to me from the insurance standpoint.
Almost worth fixing in the eyes of the insurer, pray to god they find more shit messd up or you may be stuck driving this car again.

One thing doesnt make sense is you thinking that they towed the car. Its the ideal way to get a car quickly but why would anyobody tow a car to go joy riding with it?

99% of the time a tow truck guy pins a car in this fashion is because he has an order for it. You car could have fetched like 5K where im from and thats for 15 mins of work and risk.
All the tow truck thieves I have seen will pin that thing and drop it off 15 mins max after.
too much heat to go park it unpin then go joy riding lol

Stories like this suck ass :(

skinnay 06-11-2004 03:48 AM

did the car have an alarm?

The only reason I was thinkg something with a tow truck, is because i heard one in the middle of the nite in front of the house. It could be coincidence.

There is a good chance they just popped the lock and ran with it.

CE_BigB 06-11-2004 07:40 AM

Web123,

sorry to hear about your Beemer..
I know how you loved that car man...
Hopefully you will be able to find your way into another soon.

I heard of a scam here in southern california goin on.
Was informed by the police that this maybe going on countrywide after reporting suspicious Asian men in car on our private road where I live .... They seemed to be checking out my Mustang... Well. they soon were lookin down the wrong end of a Desert Eagle .44mag and got the hell outta there... I called the police and made a report, this is when I was informed about this scam...

....EBAYERS BEWARE....

I guess some companies are selling goods on ebay for high performance cars, and then show up at the delivery address and steal the cars. This effort seems to be funded or organized by Asian gangs according to the police.. and is a very organized effort. I recently bought new gauge faces and clear turn signal lenses on Ebay.

As many of you know, I have a 90 Mustang GT that is built for roadracing. It's my daily driver and although it's not the cleanest thing around (needs paint - coming soon after I finish roll cage) but it is a very dependable aspirated 380hp aluminum V8 in a very tight chassis with tubular A arms and Crossmember, with huge aftermarket brakes and many bells and whistles and eats many 100k+ sportscars for lunch.....

... Well needless to say.. mustang is in the garage and the nissan P/U is outside under new cover.

If the frame got bent or some of the "fixable" crumple zones, then they will be weaker when straightened, so there could be a safety issue there. Also, you don't ever know what they could have been transporting...you sure don't want to take the rap for a baggie of heroine stuck under the carpet if ever searched and never have even known about it. That might sound a little anal, but I had a friend who's car got stolen out of a dealership during a maintenance check and the theives evidently went to NY delivering drugs. She made the dealership replace the entire van although there was little apparant damage to it after it was recovered.

web123s 06-11-2004 09:48 AM

I also didn't mention that i had 2 cases of homemade beer that i had just brewed in the trunk when they stole it. Some of the bottles shattered. When i went to look at the car, i popped the trunk and the rug was soked and it stunk.

Furious_Male 06-11-2004 09:52 AM

First.. sorry to hear this happened to you. I can imagine how shitty you feel.

Second.. It looks like they took a pretty hard hit. Did the police do any sort of investigation in regards to people coming into the local hospital ERs with injuries that may have been caused from a wreck? Its a long shot but you never know.

If not all you can hope is the bastards are bleeding internaly. Karma is a bitch they will get theres.

This police dept. only investigates if the car is involved in a homicide or armed robbery.

That whole impound in the pics are all cars with the same story :(

damn, that sucks. luxury car without any protection.

it's like leaving your precious belonging and waiting for someone to grab it.

i make sure that I join the PRO-GUN society, anyone messes up with me, i'll blow thier head instantly :ak47:

emthree 06-11-2004 09:44 PM

I had to pay 600 extra for the BMW alarm, it really is pointless... but could save you in cases like this.

Since I had my bimma it prob came on once or twice.

xxxoutsourcing 06-11-2004 10:12 PM

Car is in a mess for sure, but i think it looks worse than it actually is.
Many cars have crumple zones these days so it's easy to miss judge how much damage the car actually has.

It's amazing what they can do these day with a jig, my got smashed with a kink in the roof and they jigged it all out and did a great job.

Good luck with it, you might wanna consider a decent alarm or immobiliser when you get a car back, for the sake of say $500 for a decent security system you could avoid a headache of all that...
