I've got a lot of assorted toys for my computer like printer, scanner, nice surround sound setup, but my favorite toy is my Razer Boomslang 2000 mouse. Well, I wouldn't call most of them toys since most are necessary for the computer. Among the necessary items are scanner, printer & 100 MB zip drive. Among the toys would be speakers (which is off 95% of the time), mic (which is unplugged, who do I want to talk to anyway) & a ProPad 4 joystick (for playing games when I want a challenge).

Internals are better unless you are using SCSI. With IDE externals you are limited to using parallel port or USB, which are limited to a maximum of 4X writing, which is very slow.
So unless you have a SCSI card, get an internal IDE CD-writer. The best, most reliable models are made by Plextor. www.plextor.com
They have a new 16X model out that I am buying this month!
Before all the file sharing software came around, I used to get all my songs through FTP sites. This is a very frustrating method, but it does work if you are patient. You can search FTP sites at www.audiogalaxy.com.

8086 eh? I started out with a PC Jr. Thing was upgraded to 512K, (from 256K) no hard drive. Paid $2500 for it back in the mid 1980's. I learned to program COBOL on that thing, had to swap the compiler floppy with the program floppy back and forth....
Actually sold that antique for $400 years later. LOL.
Toys? We have 2 computers networked together with a gateway router, both have cams, with some kick ASS Labtec speakers connected to it. Flatbed scanner, CDBurner, graphics tablet, and a Mr. Bill doll who I tie up and torture when things are not going well.
