no joke bro. they have to accept what ever you say you can afford to pay them. you can say $10 a week, $25 a month, $1,000 everyday. doesn't matter. it shows a sign of good faith. the only drawback is the interest it collects thur the years. My father pasted away 6 years ago and nows owes $0 to the IRS

yeah, if you can pay it off do it. but remember you will be looked at everyyear for now on. that's why you have to learn about setting up offshore accounts and a few other things where your safe. I won't get into it now. just something to think about if your gonna be a big baller later in life

yea ive earned myself a lifetime trip to the audit bin

collegeclam 06-09-2004 08:21 PM

youre an idiot not filing on time and having enough deductions to cover most of your taxes.

the last thing you want is the irs hounding you, even if its for ten bucks a month. it will get annoying.

also, the irs has this thing where they wait a while before nailing you...let you think you got away with whatever, then they hit you when you least expect it.

the IRS definitely has a long reach.. best to try to settle it some way or another and if it's a large amount of money get a good tax attorney and CPA.

Just a little tidbit though: At one time not so long ago the laws stated that it was against the law not to report your income. However, there was no law stating that you had to pay any taxes on that income. I'm sure they've changed it up but this law was in effect within my lifetime and i'm not ancient.

brand0n 06-09-2004 08:52 PM

just pay em. your cool bro. they dont want to put you in jail. that costs them money. they want your money. work out a payment plan and stick 2 it.

work out deals with your main sponsors to pay you in cash:Graucho

slapass 06-09-2004 09:22 PM

Get a tax attourney. Just ask your accountant who he recommends. If you go it alone they will demand penalties and interest. If you get an attourney he will get the money you would have paid in penalties and interest but you will feel better the whole time with someone who knows WTF is going on, on your side.

mandrake 06-09-2004 09:29 PM

IRS are a cross between the Wafen SS and the Mafia dont fuck with those guys they will chase you to the end of the earth and back

CamChicks 06-09-2004 09:30 PM

You can't go to jail for not filing paperwork.
You can only go to jail if you file false info.
Worst case scenerio, you owe them money.

:2 cents:

Not True! If the IRS can satisfy a judge that you knowingly did not file, this is a felony called Tax Evasion, and yes you can have a bench warrant issued in absentia even.

I studied tax laws in both US and Canada in my previous employ.

Tell them you can afford $25 a week, and just start paying them off. No biggie. Also you will want to get your accountant to file that return. The govt are bastards if they have to assess you. You won't get any of the tax breaks you may be intitled to. They will just take your 1099s and whatever info they have on your income for that year, and tell you you owe them whatever the tables say, no deductions, no writeoffs.

You should be allowed to maximize your retirement savings going 2 years back also so by doing that, you ca also take a big chunk out of what you owe.

You can also give your spouse a one-time tax free gift of up to 60K I think ... so if you are looking to "hide some income" you may want to ask your accountant about that.

It has been several years since I have had anything to do with taxation laws, so you will want to get a free consultaion with a good accountant referred to you by somebody you know.

Hope this helps:thumbsup

BarneyRubble 06-09-2004 10:24 PM

Not looking to scare ya, but you have the right to correct info.
Usually though it is very high income individuals or corporations, or the same which are several years delinquent that are the first ones the IRS will go after.

The best advice I can give you is find an accountant that comes recommended by somebody you know, get that return filed, albeit late, and then make some minimal payment arrangements on any balance you may still have.

I highly doubt you will go to jail, but don't play the lottery on this either man

thanks a million!

yea my not filing stemmed from a great deal of ignorance - i didnt really want to try to defraud the government or anything.

i'm going to get this all hopefully resolved tommorrow.

WiredGuy 06-09-2004 10:33 PM

It's not that serious when you get the letter. It's when the auditor comes to your offices or when you need a lawyer when it gets ugly. Or better yet when the auditor comes escorted by the feds. I've had some lovely run-ins with those cocksuckers. After paying my lawyer a huge bill, I got nothing more than a slap on the wrist (so far).

CamChicks 06-09-2004 10:34 PM

unless you're Al Capone, you're not going to go to jail;
literally millions of americans are too lazy to file taxes.

tony286 06-09-2004 10:45 PM

Some of you guys are funny. You need to go to a accountant and its not like you just say I can pay 25 dollars and they go ok. You have fill out paperwork to showing what you have and what your expenses are. Dont fuck around with them , they have been playing this game for a long time. Look at your financials and see what you really can pay and get it paid as quickly as possible.
You dont need a tax lawyer if the letter says lets make payments , if you ignore this letter you could have problems. If they are going to arrest you they dont send a letter. They come with a big truck and take all your shit. lol
