The Poker Experiment: INTRODUCTION

For those that were interested I have copied this from the poker forum I post in. I lost the original thread I started here so if someone has it bookmarked bump it for me please.

_____________________________________________

Introduction:

Hello everyone, and welcome to my poker experiment. For those of you that don't know, I will be playing poker on a modest bankroll for 30 days and reporting my results for all to see. I have set a personal challenge of $10,000 to $20,000 in 30 days.

I had to put the "kickoff" on hold for a few days because of some personal stuff that came up but I'm going to start tracking everything now. I did get a few hours in the last few days and my bankroll when I started typing this was $791.95 instead of the original $500 I planned to use.

I just read all of the comments in the thread I started asking people to guess the outcome of this experiment and I love every one of them. From the well wishes to the doomsayers I enjoy each and every response. The people that say I will go bust etc. are the reason I decided to do this to begin with. Not only do I love the negative attitudes but I actually thrive on it. It's what drives me to succeed. I even had someone that has played with me call me a fish. Now this is wonderful as poker is my main source of income now and the more people that think I'm a fish the better. I can definately see why someone might think I'm a fish because I often play wild when I'm winding down or just having fun. I also know how to mix it up with the best of them. Either way, I look forward to showing these guys what I'm made of or hearing their taunts if I go bust.

Ok the details. I will be playing at Party Poker and my nickname there is "stocktrader". Feel free to stop by and wish me luck, try to get my money, or tell me how much I suck. I'll mix it up with the best of them in the chatroom as well if that's your gig. I play anything and everything from limit and NL ring games to single and multi table tourneys. Due to the limited bankroll at first I may be playing the smaller limits but that's ok as there are more fish there anyhow.

While I was writing this I played 2 $20 SNG's one of which I busted out 9th and the other I took 2nd leaving me with a profit of $16. I feel like a jouralist getting paid to write about the game I love.

Anyhow, I'll be dropping in often to leave updates for everyone and I hope to see you all at the tables. Feel free to ask me anything.

Starting bankroll as of 7:30 p.m. central time on June 9th is $807.95.

Summary of June 10th, 2004 DAY 1

I didn't get to play as much as I wanted today but I did get in a few small sessions. Started out the day with 3 $20 buy in SNG's and lost all 3 of them! Talk about ouch. Finished in 7th, 8th, and 10th place. Not a great start.

After taking a loss on all 3 of the SNG's I played a 20 minute session of 1/2 limit at a 6 max table. When I quit for lunch I was up $26.45. I don't play very many limit games these days and the terrible play here was quite refreshing. I love the fact that most people have no idea how to play a short table. They either show too much aggression with weak hands or not enough on their strong hands. I know this was a very low limit but the higher limits are hardly any better.

After lunch I spent some time with my wife then sat back down for a little poker. I decided to try another $20 SNG and someone from the forum actually stopped by to talk while I was playing. I ended up finishing 1st in this one which took some of the sting out of the 3 losses from earlier in the day. My son got home from daycare soon after I finished this tourney so I ended the session to spend time with him and visit my parents.

The last session I played was in the evening and I decided to give the $30 3 table sit and go's a run. The first one I played I had built a stack of around $2000 chips when I was dealt KK. I raise it to $600. Everyone folds but 1 who moves all in for around $1500. I call and he turns over AA. Now I could have folded to the all in bet and tried to make a comeback with my $1400 chips but in these tourneys he could have easily held any pocket pair, AK, AQ, or even AX. I did manage to build my $500 remaining chips back to $2000 when I'm dealt QQ with 15 players remaining. I raise 700 and someone moves all in again. I reluctantly called to see them turn over KK. Now this hand I would normally fold to any respectable player but the tables had combined recently and I had no experience with his play. I called feeling I may be behind and I was right. Should have thrown it away, instead I went out 15th.

I decided to enter one more $30 3 table tourney before I called it a night. Didn't take notes on this tourney but I ended up 3rd winning $180.

Starting balance for June 10th $807.95
Ending balance $960.40
Profit/Loss for the day +$152.45

SNG= Single Table No Limit Tourney.

10-20k profit? HAHAHA>.. thats the biggest pipe dream I have ever heard in my life. You sound like your a descent player, My guess is you'll break even, or at best maybe take home a K.

But what's with the documentation?

He is playing at www.partypoker.com

But, feel free to play at www.pokerboat.com :winkwink:

Good Luck

I might even try to play with you:)

Very interesting. Having never played *onine* poker, my first take is it's similar to video poker, which I don't like since odds are manipulated and you don't have an oportunity to read your opponent. But I might give it a shot when I get back from vacation in a week... Good luck!

The only reason 10k might be hard in a month is the small starting bankroll. I chose the low amount for that very reason otherwise it wouldn't be a challenge as I can easily make 10 to 20k a month as is and have been doing so for quite a while.

Peace!

I also Play quite often at POker Stars and Party Poker.

I am now having a decent additional income from my game, but it took me 4 months and losing close to $5000.00 to reach this point.

Party Poker is a fish tank but Poker Stars is really tough to beat even at low limit. However I love the challenge and it is a great place to learn and improve your game.

My stonger games are NL holdem and Stud Hi-lo, Omaha 8B comes in a distant third place. I really suck at PL omaha.

Good luck and keep us posted about how you do :thumbsup

Paul 06-11-2004 12:31 PM

Does anyone know anywhere online or offline that you can learn the ropes of poker without money being involved ? I've recently become really interested in poker, I love watching all the big poker tourneys on television and I'm quite interested in playing now but I'd like to learn without losing a load of money

winter 06-11-2004 12:31 PM

good luck man.. those all-ins are harsh when you have KK and see AA.

airpal 06-11-2004 03:22 PM

stocktrader, I wish you the best man, but honestly your early exits from the SNG's are not a good sign of what is to come.
To explain why, here is a little anecdote....

Someone once asked T.J. Cloutier if he had AA in the pocket with 3 total players left on the final table at Binions (World Series of Poker), would TJ always go all-in? Cloutier's answer was a quick, resounding "No"!

So what was his reasoning? Player 1 has almost the same amount of chips as Player 2 (TJ Cloutier being Player 3). If player 1 AND player 2 both went all in, the tournament would be practically over for one of them, and TJ Cloutier would earn his way to a 2nd place prize ....

by folding before the flop with AA!

Try http://www.pokerschoolonline.com its only 14.95 per month you can practice while you learn, they have tourneys and ring games among the students . Matt Andreson, a classmate from the school made it to the final table at the 2004 WSOP and took home $575,000.00.

Greg "Fossilman" Raymer from Poker stars won the 1st place and got $5'000,000.00 :thumbsup

I know exactly what a bad beat is. Sort of like when a newbie jumps into porn and submits 10000 hosted galleries to all big TGP's. Then their server dies from all the rejection emails.

Bad beat.

As for updates, I've been busy as shit. They's coming.

The Poker Experiment - Day 2
Summary of June 11th, 2004

(I haven't been able to take detailed notes most of this week. Tons going on lately.)

Very Short Summary.

Played 3 $30 3 table tourneys and didn't finish in the money on any of them.

Played 9 $20 SNG's. Had 1 1st place finish ($100) and out of the money on the rest. This is hilarious.

Played 5 $10 SNG's. Placed 2nd on one ($30), 3rd on another ($20), and out of the money on the rest.

Played 5 $5 SNG's. Placed 1st on one ($25), 2nd on another ($15), and out of the money on the rest.

Played in a $30 multi table tourney and went out about midway through.

Play 5/10 limit for 45 minutes and won $125.

As you can see that's a whole lot of losing to only be down $100. I have my 2 year old running around, tons of distractions, and I've been blowing off steam on poker. I only lost $100 on the whole day and I know I'm playing terrible. How anyone that wants to win can lose consistently really doesn't make sense to me.

Starting balance for June 11th $960.40
Ending balance $860.40
Profit/Loss for the day -100.00
Total Profit/Loss +$52.45

stocktrader23 06-16-2004 12:06 PM

The Poker Experiment - Day 3
Summary of June 12th, 2004

(Another brief summary.)

Played 2 $30 3 table tourneys. Finished 1st in one ($270).

Played 14 $20 SNG's. Had 1 1st place finish ($100), 1 2nd place finish ($60), and 1 3rd place finish ($40).

Played 3 $10 SNG's. No money finishes.

Played 5 $5 SNG's. Placed 1st on one ($25), and out of the money on the rest.

Played 1 $10 SNG Stud Hi/Low. Placed first ($40).

Played 1 $20 3 Table Tourney. Did not finish in the money.

Played in a $25 max NL ring game for 45 minutes and made $50.84 profit.

Played 5/10 limit for 15 minutes and lost $71.00.

Played 1/2 limit for an hour and made $26.50 profit.

Another day of me playing terrible poker for the most part. Even with the excessive losses I still came out ahead on the day. Wow.

Starting balance for June 12th $860.40
Ending balance $931.74
Profit/Loss for the day +71.34
Total Profit/Loss +$123.79

stocktrader23 06-16-2004 12:07 PM

The Poker Experiment - Day 4
Summary of June 13th, 2004

(Another brief summary.)

Played 1 $30 3 table tourneys. Did not finish in the money

Played 3 $50 SNG's. Had 1 1st place finish ($250).

Played 6 $20 SNG's. No money finishes.

Played 4 $10 SNG's. No money finishes.

Played 2 $5 SNG's. No money finishes.

Played 2 5/10 limit tables for 45 minutes. Made $122.50 profit on one table and $71.50 profit on the other.

Played in a $25 max NL ring game for 30 minutes and made $54.62 profit.

Played 2 1/2 limit tables for an hour and made a whopping $0.50 combined profit. ;)

3rd day in a row of my playing like a moron and I still came out with a profit. Not bad considering how terrible I played in the tourneys yet again.

Starting balance for June 13th $931.74
Ending balance $1,044.86
Profit/Loss for the day +113.10
Total Profit/Loss +$236.91

stocktrader23 06-16-2004 12:07 PM

The Poker Experiment - Day 5
Summary of June 14th, 2004

(Only played for 3 hours today and stayed away from tourneys because they are kicking my ass.)

Played 1 $25 Max NL table and lost $14.

Played 1 $25 Max NL table for 25 minutes and made $163.86 profit.

Played 1 $25 Max NL table for 10 minutes and made $12.55 profit.

Played 1 $20 SNG and did not finish in the money.

Played 1 $25 Max NL table for an hour and made $83.14 profit.

I normally play tourneys very well but after 3 days of playing like a nerd I decided to stay away from them for the most part today. Only played a short 3 hour session but made a nice profit in the ring games.

Starting balance for June 14th $1,044.86
Ending balance $1,268.41
