how seriously do you take a person if they avoid making eye contact while talking to you?

Not very.

I used to be really bad about looking people in the eye. I was afraid to or something. Much better now, doesn't really bother me unless they're in my "bubble".

lately i've noticed that if i stare someone down in a conversation they tend to look away. does this mean that i'm intimidating them:1orglaugh

I hate giving eye contact unless they are sitting, it kinks my damn neck.

On the flipl side - I find lately in business negotiations that the other guy and I are making such intense and uninterrupted eye contact while talking that it feels weird and unnatural, but I don't want to be the one to look away. :1orglaugh

That alone doesn't mean anything...they could just be insecure...read their other body language. But I do think eye contact is important.

eye contact is very important...if you stare all time at the floor, that doens't make you look very interested.

Very true, and if the conversation is between a man and a woman, you don't want to start sending mixed signals.
