O.J. Simpson laughs during interview in Miami yesterday, and says he's too broke to find Nicole's 'real killer.'
LOS ANGELES - O.J. Simpson says he nixed his pledge to find "the real killer" of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson because he's strapped for cash with two kids in a pricey private school.
"I no longer have the money to follow up on these leads," Simpson told The Associated Press, citing the expense of raising Sydney, 18, and Justin, 15, as the reason he isn't looking for the murderer.
His ex-sister-in-law Denise Brown scoffed at Simpson's excuse. "He looks at the real killer every morning when he shaves or washes his face," Brown told MSNBC's "The Abrams Report."
The ex-football great, who takes in $25,000 a month from pensions, has been shelling out a reported $16,000 a year per child to send the kids to the swanky Gulliver Prep near Miami.
Brown told the cable network that's as much as Simpson is willing to fork over for education. She also said her former brother-in-law wants Sydney to dip into a trust fund left by Nicole to pay "a substantial amount" of her own college tuition next year.
On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the murders of Nicole and Ron Goldman, Simpson has been making the rounds and talking up a storm.
He told NBC's "Dateline" yesterday that he has never discussed Nicole's death with the kids.
"Something we've never really spoke about," Simpson said. "Never, ever." He says psychologists and psychiatrists advised him "when the kids are ready to talk about it, they'll talk about it."
Meanwhile, a new poll by NBC News shows that more than three-quarters of Americans still believe Simpson is the real killer even though a jury acquitted him.
A whopping 77% of 1,186 people sampled think Simpson is a killer, according to the survey.
But the bitter racial divide fueled by the trial remains as wide as ever, with blacks and whites differing sharply over Simpson's guilt.
Just 29% of blacks polled believe Simpson is guilty, compared to 87% of whites.
