Ever Decide NOT to Move Someplace Due to the Lack of Broadband?
I have a great offer to move to a beautiful house in the country. My family owns the house and it will be vacant at the end of the month. I can live there rent free for as long as I'd like BUT it's about 5 miles north of town and cable/DSL is not available there. If I did move there, I would be on dial-up or satellite (which both suck ass). Am I stupid for refusing such an offer just because I am so utterly dependent on technology? Are there any satellite providers that don't suck or any other options for me?

You're not paying rent. Get yourself a small office space "in town" for a few hundred bucks a month. You'll still be out ahead, have your beautiful place in the country and broadband at the office.

there arent really places here in calif without a connection, in fact, ive never heard of a place without a connection here.
even far out in the desert, and up in the snowy mountains. Warner bros is right around the corner so Road Runner is rocking here! :thumbsup |
Yes, we have refused to move to places before because of lack of broadband.

yea I wouldn't move anywhere with out BB.. it's like moving to a place that dosen't have phone service..

5 miles is nothing for a directional wi-fi antenna. With a little effort you could be up at running. Just find someone who'd be willing to put a point on his house / balcony and point the antenna their way. I've done the same for a couple of people.

I have always lived in places with action, I would kill myself living on an isolated farm somewhere. Although I could grow shitloads of pot and not have to deal with the world which is a plus but I plan on doing that anyway just not in Kansas! Im thinkin of moving up north but i couldnt deal with seclusion, I need punk rock stores and small rock and roll pubs man. I love sitting on the porch drinking like the rest of the drunks but there doesnt sound like anything going on, id go crazy. fucking bridges over madison country type of shit? geez, gimme alley ways and tattoo parlors, rock clubs ;) |
No Internet no move turned down one offer lasth mont on that
|
actually when we were house hunting, before we put in an offer we checked into whether broadband was available. it wasn't a luxury it was necessary...at that point in time we had to be able to connect to the internet 24/7..come hell or high water...so we had DSL, cable, 2 dial-ups (both routed differently) and webtv (yeah, well, sometimes life sucks)
all systems failed only ONCE and that webtv saved our ass that day LOL |

As for the office idea, I thought about it but I like being able to work from home. I used to pay $325 for an office here in town and I went there maybe once a week. I really need to be online 24/7 so it would be easier to just have a home office. |
Since I am based overseas, bandwidth (or the lack thereof) is the main determinant of where I move.

BB is a must ! If you are used to BB, using dialup very annoying.
|
well you could always use dricway satellite Internet.. It sucks and I know a lot of people complain about it. But if it's set up right it can be half decent. They have B/W limits which really suck in this biz and the upload is 56k but if configured right the d/l isn't too bad.
It's way better than dial up, but something you don't get unless you have no other choice for BB. |
I couldn't move to the beach, had to settle on living almost downtown Costa Rica because beaches had ni broadband :(
