Any suggestions on a good laptop?
Believe it or fuckin not, I still do not own a laptop. All my friends have them, but I.. I'm a cheap bastard so I have always put it off.
But I need one now. What's good for under $1500? |
Stangster I'm with you buddy. I need one too especially to look cool on a Airplane.. I need one of those palm pilots as well. Then I really look like i know what i'm doing...

Sony vaio - I've been drooling over those for a long time. I used to want a laptop so bad but after a while I realized that I would probably not want one. See, first I had a beeper with text messaging. I'd go out, then I'd get paged every 5 minutes. After a few months it got annoying as hell. Finally the company went bankrupt so I didn't have my pager access anymore. Relief! Now I have a cellphone. Not because I want one but because I need one. I still do not have a landed phone line. So, I take the phone with me in case my car breaks down.... and every 5 minutes someone calls. Anyway, my point is that if I got a laptop it would be the same thing. I'd take it with me when I'd go out and next thing you know it'd be like work is following me. Yech! I need time away from the puter. Not that a laptop wouldn't be cool, just not for me right now heh. Anyway, if you read all of this, congratulations! (-:

stangster.... if you find one, please let me know... I am a cheap ass bitch too, been looking at ebay and everything but I have no damn idea what I am looking for......... My hubby has been trying to buy me a laptop for months, and since I broke my tailbone a couple of weeks ago and it's oh so hard to sit here, he's really been looking hard....... LOL
I tried the Dell thing but they turned me down........ I have Gateway to thank for that...... very long boring story... LOL Tam |
Like 12clicks said the sony is very good, but if your looking to be just a bit more price conscious, Look at the HP Pavilion, I have it and its awesome... Remember when you get a laptop, sit back and think about just how much work you will really be doing on it, before you spend more then you had to.

Lightning... my sites......... but sitting elsewhere and on something besides my sore damn ass... LMAO
HP?? Are they good? I had a friend who had one once and it sucked... but then it could have been shit he did to it too.. he had little exp. with a pc Tam |
Tam, The HP Laptops are very good, weve never had any problems, but i dont use it to much, just for travel, well thats not true, Amy like to bring it in bed and she makes some galleries while watching tv... Personally the keyboards on laptops drive me nuts with my big hands, but she loves it.
Also for around 1200-1500 you get a very decent model.. ------------------ Smile and Be Happy http://www.lightningfree.com |
ok so having gone thru all that... what am I looking for in a laptop to just say, work on my sites...... speed and such?
I told you. I am a dumbass when it comes to laptops....... you are about to see just how much of a dumbass. LMAO Tam |
Tam - you definately want one with a TFT display. The inexpensive ones do not use TFT. If you do not use TFT the screen will blur every time something moves. I don't remember the non-tft display, HPA I think, DONT get one with an HPA! There are some newer models that are inexpensive with TFT that I've seen, just gotta look!

I broke down and bought a new one last summer; against my better judgement, I took a friend's advice and bought an Acer ultralight, and I couldn't be happier with it.
It's a 450mhz P3 (I think the current ones start at 500mhz), with built-in ethernet and 56K modem. Thing is about an inch thick, weighs 4 pounds, runs well and takes abuse like a Cuban welterweight. I think they go for about $1600 now, not a far stretch from your $1500, and a darn sight cheaper than most Vaios... (as an aside, I ended up working a project building a demo system on a top-end Vaio about a month after I bought this; I wasn't impressed -- it's a nice machine, but not nice enough to justify the price difference, and the disk system had SERIOUS speed problems (took forever to copy some large MPEG2's onto it). Hope that helps. |
What about the Titanium PowerBook from Apple?

Can't tell you what is a good buy, but my FUCKING 2 MONTH OLD WINBOOK IS ALREADY BACK TO THE FACTORY FOR FUCKING REPAIRS!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I went to check out the Sony's but they really seem overpriced. I know that Sony is overpriced period, but the laptops seem overlypriced. I picked up an issue of PC WORLD and there happens to be a notebook comparison. For the budget systems (under $2000 - that's a budget? lol) here's what they tested:
Dell Inspiron 3800 ($1299) Dell Latitude CPt S600ST ($1499) Micro Express NP4800B ($1799) Gateway Solo 1150cl ($1299) Acer TravelMate 350TE ($1999) They found the Inspiron to be a good value, however recommends all 5. Tam - When I get one, I'll definitely let you know which one I got! http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif |
I've had an Acer Travelmate 340 (?) for about 6 months now and no major problems yet. It was by far the cheapest Pentium 3 available when I bought it. I think I got it for about $1700 or so.

thanks stangster...... I need all the brain help I can get..... I still have a week or so before my taxes get here so that gives you time to get one and report back to me. LOL

I bought a laptop a few years ago, online, a no namer, but it hasn't failed me one bit. a buddy of mine has a big namer, and he has bad pixels, and it freezes on him... No matter what i say, if you are really going to be taking it with you, get the lightest one you can, with a CD rom built in... otherwise, it's annoying to have a laptop thats too heavy, or worse, a light laptop that you have to carry an external anything....

I don't know what your interests are, but if you have the least little interest in playing the odd 3D game on your laptop while traveling or whatever, then make sure you get one with an ATI Rage mobility video card.
Quake3 runs better on my old P2 233 with 32 MB RAM then it does on my laptop with a 550Mhz K6-2 with 64 MB of RAM because of its terrible video card. The cheap video cards they throw in some of those laptops are amazingly awful. Just something else to consider. |
I like IBM Thinkpads myself. But they are a bit pricey so perhaps an ibook.

I had a Sony Vaio, but some asshole broke into my apartment and stole it. I bought an Acer travelmate to replace it. It is alright, but I wish I had my Sony because the dumbfuck forgot to steal the external floppy, cd player and a few other things.

I got a real nice Laptop at Cheetah's in Vegas.

Over the past 8 yrs. I've had my hands on -
386 Dell Laptop - Sturdy and nice. Some VP walked off with it. 486 NEC Versa - Didn't work well. Sent it back after 2 weeks. Not a friendly machine. Toshiba T4700 - This fucker held up like a champ, had 3 of them at one point. Hung in there til power supply took the big snooze. BTW anyone how has one a is looking for parts and mem get in touch with me. 486 Wave Laptop - Cheap not for serious use. Didn't last long at all. 6 months maybe. 486 Compaq - Sturdy, held in there til I traded to a friend. Still working, guys running Linux on it. P150 1 Micron - Very nice, held in there for a long time. Hard drive starting to make the high pitched noise they make right before they crap out a month ago. PIII 400 Sony Viao - Nice a sleek. Downside is the lack of software updates from Sony. I have a PII 350 Desktop unit as well. Both are cool machines. Got on-line 3 weeks ago to replace my Micron at egghead auctions and scored a Compaq PII 233 for $4oo. Fucker is running really well so far. You can score a cool machine for alot less than $1500 ya just have to look..... |
