Had a bad day, but I learned....
 

On Monday, February 5, 2001 I learned a valuable lesson that I think needs to be shared. It deals with hosting...

I was fortunate enough to get the #1 spot on al4a's dailt gallery listings with my newest project and was thrilled to death. Wouldn't you be?!? I mean, geez... people would sell their own mother to get that spot!

At any rate, traffic was flowing, there were a few sales and I was happier than I'd been in weeks; happier than I'd been in months, actually.

Then it happened. My site disappeared of the face of the Earth. The company hosting it pulled the plug. Why? Because their server(s) couldn't handle the strain.

Funny part is that I talked with them about the load they could handle before going ahead with this project and was told by their tech person that it would be fine. No problem. No sweat.

Hmmmm..... They claim that I was pulling 10 gigs per halk hour with that one page alone and that I was filling up 2 T1's with all the file requests for that one gallery page. Another thing is that the server logs for the site indicated a total of 191 Megs, NOT gigs of transfer for the month of February before everything puked.

I don't know about you, but something doesn't sound right. Oh, and their server locked up twice before they un-DNS'ed me. Something about it had duplicated itself 100+ times.

What's the moral of the story? Make sure your provider can handle a REAL load before making any big moves.

I have since moved to a REAL F'ing server that has experience in the field of REAL traffic management and am confident that everything is going to work out just fine.

I know how you feel.. had that happen to me about a year ago........ it sucks rocks... not to mention sucking the wind right out of your sails...... so maybe YOU see why I am such a picky bitch about who hosts my sites. I am like a damn bill collector when it comes to finding a host.. I ask stupid ass questions that they can't answer... but I know what I need... so I'll ask it, if they can't do it then I go on....... LOL

Thanks for the congrats..... ALL 4 of my kids had strep throat the same week I took that trip down the stairs and broke my damn tailbone... so it has been sheer hell here at home........ at least they are all well.. my ass is still broke... but I'll live thru it. LOL

Your wounds will heal too babe...... it's a shitty deal that you got. but at least you learned from it, so all is not totally lost. I'd be making a huge fuss at that lost cash though... a huge fuss. I'd have to whip out the Rude Bitch on their asses. lol

blackfrogg? Can I ask what hosting company you're using now? Anyone else who is concerned or holding back because of fear that this situation will happen to them please let me know cuz I can get you set up with the best host for large amounts of traffic....

Thanks Tam. Let this be a learning exp for you as well, dont host on Geo-Cities if you do porn ok! Or in this case dont do something equaly as ignorant and host from a company you know nothing about. Most of em are just a bunch of kids with servers in their bedrooms re-selling the shit.

Do your homework.. Like he said now he learned. Cutting corners on webhosting will always bite you in the ass, but Tam, if you would like I will bite softly..

Ouch!! I know you are a pro, this is a lesson for the guy who posted the thread, but, I too am learning.. No biting for boneprone.. I always had that problem in grade school, but like I said I bite soft..

Yup, your host was definitely bullshitting you. I had a #2 spot on Al4A a coupl of weeks ago and it only used up about 5 gigs. Any good host should be handle Al4A'a and thehun's traffic with no problems.

In response to Bone's statements and implications, I have this to say for myself:

1) I work in the IT field by day and have done so for about 6 years now. Everything from owning/operating a retail store that built and repaires PC's to managing a web team as I do now. Also, I have worked with adult websites on a casual basis for as long a time and am by no means new to this game; though I am also not even close to being an expert.

2) I have known the former hosting company (and its principals) since 1995 and have done lots of business with them involving MAINSTREAM stuff only. The problem was that they had never had anyone be SUCCESSFUL at getting mass amounts of traffic (adult or otherwise) before so they had zero reason to doubt their servers' abilities. We ALL learned and all I wanted to do was pass the learning along to others that may be in the same boat now or later; not be accused of blatant ignorance.

3) I've had the domain for 5 or so years now, it's been on their servers reliably all along, and only recently did I decide to use it for adult galleries, etc. This wasn't a fly-by-night acquisition that I looked for the cheapest host I could find parked it there.

5) Geocities? Hmmm... What was the name of this message board again? Heh-heh-heh...

If you want to make a point, don't use someone or something as an example if you don't have all the facts.

I'm not pissed or anything. It sounds like your point was the same as mine and that point was to get the word out that not all providers/hosts can do what they THINK they can and it is better to launch major projects on proven warhorses.

So far they seem to be pretty good. They got the site switched over in a day and all the Network Solutions paperwork, which as you know CAN be a nightmare sometimes, went through real smooth.

For my other projects I'm using Cyberwurx.com and have been with them for a while. Very pleased with them, too.

blakk, we have webmastercommerce.com on their servers and I think they have been having some trouble over there, our email keeps going down for the past few days.... My boss has been using them for quite sometime now and they have always done them good..... any chance they have just experienced some trouble and that's what happened?

I am not that experienced with them, but he seems to have very good luck with that host.

Good rule of thumb, is a host using T1's as a backbone, even 3or4 of em, probley aren't ready for the TGP traffic experience http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/eek.gif

oh no, Tam. xxxwebhosting is the NEW host. The old host is a local firm I've dealt with personally for non-adult stuff for a few years. Secondly, you didn't say anything offensive.

And Wizzo, let me be the first to say that you are definitely right. For non-adult stuff, maybe, but high volume tgp traffic takes a whole other type of setup.
