Wireless Internet Connections for Laptops

Looking for a wirless internet service provider-connection company to use for my laptop.. I was going with a company called go america and for I think 50 bucks a month can have unlimited use, and can connect in most cities via sattlelite from your laptop..

But Ive heard there is some other provider that is much better called Ricochet? Anyone had any success with this new technology?

I cant wait to do work and connect to the net from my laptop anywhere I go, without having to be pluged into any phone line.. This will be great.

What kind of speed to you get from wireless??? $50 bucks sounds pretty sweet.

stangster 02-07-2001 02:17 AM

not to stray from the topic but what kind of laptop ya got?

boneprone 02-07-2001 02:33 AM

From Go America, You are getting a 56k type speed, something comparable to a standard dial up speed.. But I heard this new Ricochet one is fast.. Like 156k speed.. Both are sattlelite, and both cost the same so I have heard, But Ricochet is not in Portland quite yet from what I understand..

But GO America is now in every large metro city.. It is awsome, you could go anywhere and do your work.. You could be at the strip bar, and at the same time posting messages on gofuckyourself.com without being pluged into anything!! Its all wireless and soo much fredom!!

I got a sony F series.. Awsome all around laptop.. The best in my opinon.. go to sony.com and check em out, its in the VIAO section, under notebooks. 850 mhz is the fastest laptop you can buy on the market with any company, but dont buy into that shit.. Get a 750 mhz, with lots of memory (192 or more) for almost 1500.00 cheaper than the new 850 mhz.. The 1500.00 extra bucks is not worth the extra 100 mhz, you are just paying for the top of the line bragging rights..

Interested to know what kind of speed you get with a wireless modem? Can you only download and not upload?

Here is the url for the go America stuff if you want to look into it.. From what Ive read on the page, some connections may be as slow as 28k.. But this Ricochet one can go 156k.. But FUCK its not availble as widespread as the go america one.

Heres the url to see if there is wirless access in your area.

Has anyone here actually heard anything about these services, or does anyone here use them?

Actually CDPD connections like Go America are lucky to be 20K -- downhill, with a tailwind, on a good day. The nicest thing you can say about it is that it works in a whole lot of places without a phone jack. (forget using it in Vegas, tho -- had a hell of a time at Internext getting a connection).

If you're looking at Go America, look real carefully at what's really roaming and what's not -- their unlimited plan (at least used to) seems to have a hidden per kilobit surcharge in some coverage areas -- like my home area... I got a far better deal from WISP as a provider for the areas I'm liable to use it in. PCMCIA modems vary from about $450 for a Sierra Wireless to about $225 for a Merlin. They all pretty much work the same.

Ricochet rocks. The downside is REAL limited coverage area, and an external modem that (last time I saw one, it may have gotten better) was about the size and weight of a brick. Figure you'll get about ISDN grade service from it.

It's gonna be funny when goamerica looks at their referrer logs and it'll have gofuckyourself.com in it.

You can check out ricochet at http://www.ricochet.com
(there you go lens, now ricochet won't be left out)

It's not quite yet available here in Phoenix yet but when it is you can bet I am getting it! Slated for realease soon out here...

As I understand it they are attaching transmitters to traffic signals all over the place. And get this, they claim you can use the service while travelling up to 70 mph!

Ok this is good to know, so I can either connect at the speed of a slug, or carry around a faster modem that weighs like a stone bucket of slugs..

So far you are the only person on the planet I know using this techmology.. I wouldnt be so concerned about all this, if they didnt make you sign a 1 year contract.
