So how many of you "hand write" there own HTML?

I have never used an HTML editor in my life. I tried Frontpage 2000, but got bored of it after about 3 minutes!
I write ALL my HTML myself. I find you have more control over your pages that way. And you can learn a lot more about constructing the pages that way.

HOW MANY OF YOU DO YOUR OWN?

Girlie 01-29-2001 03:09 PM

I do!

titmowse 01-29-2001 03:11 PM

I can,but I don't wanna.

I use an HTML editor called Arachnophilia. It's a text-based editor, so I still gotta know my codes, but my hands don't cramp up with all the repetitive tags.

I kind of do. I use CD2HTML to make the galleries (mostly so the thumbs can be created) then I go change the layout & add stuff. Thank goodness for CuteHTML http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

Don't you find hand coding extremely tedious? I usually use a WYSIWG to do the main layout, then I go through later with notepad to clean it up, if need be. When you start mucking around with complicated tables and such, I find hand coding just takes too long.

WEBDUDE 01-29-2001 03:16 PM

Ok, so there's repetitive tags, but thats the way I prefer to do it that way.

I'D JUST LIKE TO POINT OUT HERE THAT I'M NOT DISSING HTML EDITOR USERS.

I WAS JUST ASKING OUT OF CURIOSITY.

Just thought I'd make that point,

Thanks,

WEBDUDE.

WEBDUDE 01-29-2001 03:17 PM

I copy and paste a lot too....I have to
hehehe

Girlie 01-29-2001 03:34 PM

I also copy and paste my ass off! But nothing is better then writing your own code. I love it http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

I've tried a few time to do html.
I have learned the basics but really get confused on other codes.
Is there a good site to help you learn html and gives online tests?

Warphead 01-29-2001 03:53 PM

Shit man, I'm updating 4 sites a day, 7 days a week, no scripts and one's a TGP! That'd be an awful lot of HREFS and IMG's!

eiht_98 01-29-2001 04:04 PM

only dreamweaver

TobeRmorY 01-29-2001 05:35 PM

I grew up writing code in basic / Cobol / pascal. It is a pain in the butt! Dreamweaver & Frontpage do all my work for me, with only a little tidying up of the code to speed things up. Each to their own though!

Clovis 01-29-2001 05:57 PM

I dont think much of front page 2000, but if you wanted to turn out something real quick for a client it might be allright. CoffeeCup has a good text editor with lots of useful javascripts and tags that you drop in with a click of the mouse.

WEBDUDE 01-29-2001 06:20 PM

Hey paparoach!

Go to http://www.AAAhtml.com

They show you the basics, plus tables and frames and they have loads of links to other web resource sites.

Dont know about online tests though.

I simply create another "private" page where I test out my efforts before transferring them onto a live page.

WEBDUDE 01-29-2001 06:23 PM

I tried Frontpage once, then tried to send the page, via Microsofts web publishing Wizaerd, but it wouldnt work.

Kept more or less telling me "Fuck off! We cant send it" in words to that effect!

Bake 01-29-2001 06:28 PM

I do most of my own code But I use homesite 4.5 and I use the drop down menu for the heffs and stuff save on typeing.I have been useing front page to add text to the page but thats all i use it for.
whats the shortest thumbnail tag you can use.

WEBDUDE 01-29-2001 06:36 PM

hehe

I cheat with thumb nails!

My host gives you a free thumbnail template which is already done for you.

Now Ive said that, Ive probably lost the respect of this whole community. hehehe

I've only been webmastering a few months, so I havent really coveredtages like thumbnails.
Just mostly use href and src tags with a few "target new" thingies, etc.

(BLUSHING NOW WITH EMBARRESSEMENT)

So how are thumbnail tages written as Id like to know!

misterwalrus 01-29-2001 07:16 PM

I do about 50 / 50 depending on what I'm putting ont he page

blakkfrogg 01-29-2001 07:28 PM

Since I work on non-adult stuff all day and then adult stuff all night, I can write HTML in my sleep and even while showering. Cutting and pasting makes life very easy and although not using WYSIWYG's means a lot more typing, my pages are as small in file size as possible because I don't have any extra/useless tags in my coding.

As an experiment at work one day, I had the graphic designer make a page using Dreamweaver. When she was done, I took the same page and re-wrote it by hand. The resultant file size was 40% smaller.

Now you might think that a few kilobytes doesn't really make all that much difference, but think of it this way: Suppose the same gallery gets listed on Hun, AL4A, Thumbnailpost, Worldsex, Ampland, Thumbzilla, Richard's Realm and a few other big name tgp's. You're looking at well over 100,000 page loads, right? Hmmm.... 100,000 times, say, 5k. That's 500,000 kilobytes or 500 Meg. Now multiply that by however many galleries you might list during the month.

I know, I know. Maybe the savings doesn't add up to the overall aggravation of having to learn ALL the HTML codes, but I'm broke, so learning is something I can afford to and spending money when I don't have to is not. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif

*phew*

Can I go home, open my fridge and open a beer now? LOL

I hand code all my html inside Perl scripts -- which generate my pages for me. I used to use DOS batch files and Java for a TGP I had. A text editor w/ a powerful script language would be nice for some tasks -- but so far programming Perl code seems to be the most elegant solution to most of my HTML needs... My favorite text editor is TextPad -- it saves Unix format files and it's pretty straightforward.

The GateKeeper 02-02-2001 03:57 PM

Do both as necessary ...... had to alot of raw code when doing CFM files.

Use the WYSIWYG editor to get started and then tweek the code as requires.

Use GoLive, Dreamweaver, ColdFusion Stuido, Drumbeat, or plain old note pad.

Depends if I am doing HTML, DHTML, CFM or ASP. Java, Pearl and CGI programing is best keep simple and using just a text editor where I can.

No FrontPage, I can see where FP would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

They all have good tools in them and the trick is to pick which one you can get to do your bidding.

Time is usually the factor and editors help you cut your time.

WEBDUDE 02-02-2001 04:01 PM

Hey, its really interesting to know the different ways you go about building your sites.
I'm glad I started this topic.

Gemini 02-02-2001 04:25 PM

We use FP 2000 to rough the pages and then use the html view to change it by hand usually. Most servers dislike FP's uploads since it wants to enter the main command mode on the server and thats a big no no. Got that info from one of our pay for host companies when we couldn't U/L with it yet FP Express would work like a song. <S>

FP sure saves time on tables and what not. Who needs their other garbage like counters and such? They don't give you any real info anyhow. Now if we could just figure out how to kill that webbot thingee in it!

kemp 02-02-2001 04:39 PM

Its nice to know that when you open up a page
you know exactly where everything is placed.
ie-pages like this one. I started using homesite 4 years ago and only use wizzywigs for very simplistic designs. But I do prefer to handcode my sites. I use lots of background images and it's just easier by hand...ask Lens he calls me for help all the time ...

I handcoded my site but need to redo it...

I still handwrite my html and I still use DOS. I don't like using windows. Windows is for newbies. I prefer a more "hands on" approach like DOS.

I created my own browser using c++ because i hate using these new fangled browsers with their fruity little blink tags. You can download my browser at: http://www.geriatric-dinosaur.com

I made my own computer using old cans and chewing gum wrappers. I wanted email so I made my own ISP in my basement. I made a T1 line out of last years christmas lights.

In spring i sow crops. I use a crop rotation system. I grow barley, wheat and rye the first year and bananas, papayas and mangoes the second. The third year the fields lie fallow like my wife's uterus.

I have 5 cows for milk and dairy products. I love churning my own butter. It's always soft and creamy and makes for an excellent anal lubricant.

I do all my html by hand and I have since the beginning about 2.5 years ago. I have yet to see a wussy-wig be as precise as my own coding. For the most part they were never multi-browser compatible. Most of my sites are simple tables & junk but do you really need anything fancy? If it loads fast and it's clean then that's the way to go for me (-:

Rip 02-02-2001 06:35 PM

It's kind of like when the so called audiophiles say to you that their $2800 record player will outperform a cd player

I asked this dumb fuck to turn up the amplifier while the cd player was on

...good and loud

then I told him to put his hand on the base of his record player, which should have been vibrating pretty good with the volume of the music

Then I asked him what he thought the sound would be doing to the tone arm and the lp if the record play was on, instead of the cd player

Back to html editing, there is nothing wrong with doing scripts by hand, you can learn html... but they are slow as hell

damn, I wish I did that by hand, I feel like I should report myself to the html writers guild, do they have a confessional?

theWatsonian 02-02-2001 09:34 PM

I learned to write html using notepad and still use that for quick changes. I have used dozens of editors over the last year and I still come back to Dreamweaver. Sometimes, though, I still take a moment and stare at the screen, marvelling at the pictures. For a kid that was learning dos on a trs-80 at 13 years old all this is pretty incredible.

How's that for a first post?

I have'nt really learned html code yet.
Just bits and pieces.
I'm still trying to find a decent page maker that I can use.

sixfm 02-03-2001 12:49 AM

Oh yeah, and if you do html by hand then find a good text editor that can search & replace through multiple files. I use Notetab Pro, a program like notepad on steroids, and you can do search and replace plus it has this feature that lets you build HTML code snippets. You double click on it and it inserts the code in your page. It's great to create blank templates, sponsor codes, and all kinds of time saving stuff with it. FYI. It's 19.95 for the pro plus they have a freeware version and a pro demo. Check it out http://www.notetab.com

Yes, I still do everything by hand, but with Object Oriented Programming (OOO) in mind, I always make sure my code is going to be reusable to the max. My pages are now all designed that way.

I use my own html code, and set it up in notepad so i just push the down arrow and 1 key so i can change the pics in a gallery lighting fast. It's pretty easy if ya got a good setup. I woudn't mind learnign to use an editor though.

blackcat 02-04-2001 06:07 PM

are u guys mad?? handwriting is a loss of time, and time is money...
Dreamweaver is the best editor available. Please don't even think in use Frontpage... it really sucks(like any other microsoft product)...
Some effects like Dynamic html can't be made by handwriting...

Well i will add this in on the subject: if you ever apply for a real webmasters job they require that you do all your html buy hand, here is what i have seen in some ad's.

example...
Webmaster wanted:
must know extensive html/dhtml, hand coding only, no dreamweaver types and must know photoshop and java scripting applications, knowlage of C-PHP programming a plus.
