Anyone notice the internet is less popular?

I was checking some well known TGP's on alexa today and noticed they all are about half a popular as they were back in January. So I check Sex.com and Playboy.com to see if it was just free sites and they were getting worse too.

So I checked AOL, MSN, Microsoft, Windows, Google, etc... and noticed that everyone is about 1/2 their old popularity. If they were #3000, they are now #6000, were #12,000, now #24,000.

Is the internet getting less popular in general or is it just Alexa's toolbar is actually being uninstalled often enough to fuck up their data?

I dont know 1 single person that has an alexa toolbar:2 cents:

For the impared:

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...www.sony .com
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...=www.sex. com
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr....play boy.com
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...w.porn no.com
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr... eurcurves.com

I am wondering if your server stats reflect their stats too. As in, if you had a 300k tgp in January, is it 150k now? Or 50k in January is 25k now.... etc.

Alright, I admit, my gf just looked at me with a weird look because I laughed pretty hard at that one.

Um... ranking is relative, not absolute.

ZoiNk 06-04-2004 02:12 PM

More people are using adware removers and they all consider alexa as something that should be removed.

monaro 06-04-2004 02:14 PM

what does sextracker tell you?

acctman 06-04-2004 02:16 PM

just wait till Internet version 2.0 is released. the current beta version is covered with spam, popups, virii, and spyware. All Gore and Microsoft will launch 2.0 soon

Good point, let me go and check.

haha come on you can't be serious. Alexa doesn't measure absolute but relative volume! There's just some new sites coming up that share the total volume of traffic.

That could be it... spyware removers usually kill it.

Rhino22 06-04-2004 02:19 PM

It's because everyone has to pay for porn now. You can't get it for free anymore. :1orglaugh

bizmak 06-04-2004 02:22 PM

Maybe brow. Who knows :winkwink:

V_RocKs 06-04-2004 02:23 PM

Sextracker tells me that Alexa is a piece of shit and is being uninstalled at a rate twice as high as it is being installed.

Thats pretty funny... If porn was as readily available 5 years ago as it is today, I would never have paid for it. Exept to put my first payout check over the payout limit, of cource.

McSpike 06-04-2004 03:38 PM

oh boy. internet getting less popular... use some common sense.

I dont too LOL

cayne 06-04-2004 03:42 PM

I don't believe this, there are some many statistics proofing that there are more and more users "online".

Manowar 06-04-2004 03:44 PM

I would say the net is only getting bigger and more used. The more people that are born, the more motherfuckaz' that can go online. And these days, every kid basically learns all sorts of shit about computers at school. :2 cents:

AMADude 06-05-2004 12:33 AM

I would say Alexa is fucked. Try other research.
:2 cents:

SeTec 06-05-2004 12:35 AM

nope

V_RocKs 06-05-2004 12:35 AM

So in all likelyhood, it is that as more websites come online, Alexa's stats show more users with less market share than they once had even though the may still have grown in size... Fuck you Alexa, I never installed that shit and I am glad.

EviLGuY 06-05-2004 12:48 AM

The internet is NOT getting less popular. I doubt it ever will. It will evolve though.

V_RocKs 06-05-2004 12:49 AM

Into what?

Face (o_0) 06-05-2004 01:43 AM

im kinda getting bored with the internet myself

I heard Envisiontext is going to redesign it.

Baal 06-05-2004 02:04 AM

Damn, it's a *relative* number, not an *absolute* number. Only a few people got that fact.

The original post compared to a marathon:
John Smith finished 100th in the marathon last year, but this year he finished 500th. Jane Doe finished 2nd last year, but finishes 800th this year. THEREFORE, there are fewer people running in the marathon this year, because they both finished lower than last year.

Make sense? Nope! The position they finished in is a *relative* number. The place they finished in has nothing to do with the number of people running in the marathon. Could be a thousand, could be a billion.

The number of people running in the marathon (or surfing web pages) is the absolute number. The place they finish in (their ranking) is relative to every other runner... it doesn't determine the number of runners.

vapewiz 06-05-2004 02:08 AM

Not 100% sure but isn't a lower alexa raiting better? As for traffic being down sure it is there are millions of college kids back home with mom and pops and without their college dorms high speed connection. :2 cents:
