atkins diet, does it really work..?

heh, know this has been discussed before here, but the search is once again apparently b0rked. does following the "atkins" diet really work to take off weight? when reading up online it seems too good to be true, eggs and bacon for breakfast, beef w/ cheese for lunch, etc... this whole atkins thing isn't some cruel joke to make me even fatter..?

detoxed 06-04-2004 11:04 AM

If you are fine with never eating more than 20 grams of carbs a day for life then go for it.

Faith69 06-04-2004 11:06 AM

Atkins does really work... hubby lost 45 pounds... when he stopped it, he only gained 10 back... and we ate tons of great food! I went on it with him just for support, and I lost 5 pounds... My energy levels were the highest they have ever been! I'm going back on it, just for the healthy feeling, not to lose weight... Let me know if you want some good recipes to help you get through it :)

Manowar 06-04-2004 11:07 AM

people say not eating wont make them skinny because its their metabolism

You never saw a fat prisoner of war

You've obviously not done your Atkins research :) You are only supposed to stay on the 20 grams of carbs a day for a short time... then slowly up your carbs to find out when you start to gain weight back... once you start putting weight back on, you subract 5 grams of carbs a day from what you were eating, and that is your ideal carb limit.... generally most people are between 50 and 100 per day, but each person is different...

jacerock 06-04-2004 11:09 AM

Went from 180 to 167 2 weeks. I am always hungry and tired as shit though. I take hydroxie cut to wake me the hell up.

Have you been drinking your 6 to 8 glasses of water a day? That might help... and try to choose your 20 grams of carbs from more healthy food than burgers and fatty stuff... that might help :2 cents:

I was full of energy on the plan, and never felt better... I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well! The next two weeks will get better... I felt like you did the first three to four days and then it went away.... some people it takes a little longer... hang in there though :) That's great you've lost 13 pounds already!!! Congrats!!

market4s 06-04-2004 11:22 AM

you want to be healthy? or just "thin"? ... atkins can make you thin, but you'll never look healthy. try a low calorie diet with some exercise.:2 cents:

fulcrumstudio 06-04-2004 11:24 AM

I agree with Naughty....read the book...don't just think it's a protien only diet....I lost 73lbs in 6 months...am doing my first triathalon in October.......nothing tastes as good as thin feels...

axelcat 06-04-2004 11:25 AM

It works but is very dangerous

benc 06-04-2004 11:25 AM

that would be my advice as well. 5 years from now all these atkins people are going to be having heart attacks like crazy from eating bacon every day.

Losing weight is pretty simple. Put down the fast food, put down the coke, and get some exercise.

i'm going on my second day of near no carbs... i mut say, i feel like shit. absolutely no energy at all, drinking tons of water though... so you can really eat these meals of solid proteins and fats w/out packing on mass poundage? when i've dieted in the past fats were what had to be avoided at all costs..!

JFK 06-04-2004 11:27 AM

I tried it , lost weight , stopped- gained it all back plus some:(

Rich 06-04-2004 11:30 AM

If you're really overwieght, it will help you drop pounds faster than anything. The problem is, everyone I know who's been on it has put the weight back on. If you can drop the pounds and then get on a normal, healthy eating routine and workout schedual, I'm sure you could keep it off. :)

NoCarrier 06-04-2004 11:38 AM

People saying how dangerous it is, how you only eat bacon and fat are the ones who don't know shit about Atkins.

You can eat a lot of fish and vegetables if you want.

My dad was on it and he started eating more vegetables than ever before.

He went from 250 to 175 in 10 months. His blood pressure came back to normal and his sugar level is now perfect.

Of course, he had to exercise a little.

No wonder why we have so many obese people with Type 2 diabetes. All those "low fat" products have incredible amount of carbs.

You can have carbs, but be reasonnable. All that sugar will kill ya.

chodadog 06-04-2004 11:39 AM

It does work. There were a bunch of theories about why it worked. Scientists were stumped. You could eat as much as you want and lose weight. It seemed to defy the laws of science. Atkins came up with a bunch of theories. Ketosis, breathing and peeing out calories. That was proved to be untrue. He also had a theory about how fats and protein involved a more complex process of being converted into energy than carbohydrates, which is true, i think, but he believed more calories were burned during this process. That was also proved to be false.

So scientists still couldn't figure out what was going on. But then one researcher finally noticed something. Even though people in their tests on the atkins diet were told they could eat as much as they want, they were actually eating fewer calories than the other people on the test on the regular low fat/high carb diets.

Long story short, a guy in Sweden or Denmark, can't remember which, discovered that Protein fills people up quicker, and for longer. Your appetite is satisfied with less food than on a traditional diet.

Simple as that.

The best option would be a high protein and low fat diet. That would work really well.

Since the Monday after Easter I have lost around 60 pounds. Things like not eating bread seem natural now and I dont really miss it. Dont even buy it at the grocery anymore, even tho im allowed a couple of slices a day. One things thats helped is a daily walking regimen and a multivitamin a day. Also had to give up even diet cokes. Dunno if it was the carbonation or the artificial sweetener, but I was retaining water like a mutha:(

Doctor Dre 06-04-2004 11:42 AM

Every fucking diet works if you apply it correctly .

Alisa 06-04-2004 12:06 PM

No atkins diet for this girl.
over a year ago I lost about 30 pounds in almost 2 months. How I did it , simple, took all bad fatty foods out of my diet and ate 3 meals a day with snacks in between, ate alot of protein and still ate carbs but I only at carbs during the day, breakfast and lunch always had cards for I needed the engery and then my super was protien with little carbs but no starchy carbsand no food after 7pm , I also started doing 30 min a day cardio for 5 days a week and after the first month I added weight training in and I have not put any pounds back on and I am in the best shape I have ever been in.
Key to success:
motivation
Healthy diet
and daily exercise with training

ehulk81 06-04-2004 12:16 PM

Proper fitness training and exercise is all you need, its impossible to maintaine and active physical life on the atkins diet, you must have carbs to replenish your energy levels as well as rebuild muscle tissue:ticking

Syl 06-04-2004 12:29 PM

I followed atkins for several months and lost all that I wanted to (35lbs). Now I eat normally but make sure to weigh myself often. I revert back to the diet once I see a 5lb gain. It's gone in a matter of days usually. Maybe not for everyone but it was the only thing that gave the results I wanted. Good luck!

bizmak 06-04-2004 12:35 PM

i cant be on diet. Therefore i have 63 kgs :) I go to eat some sandwitch

Eric 06-04-2004 12:46 PM

I think the biggest thing missing from this discussion is that when it states to stay under 20 carbs a day they are talking about Net Carbs. You can eat pretty much as much fiber as you want. Net Carbs are sugar and starches that fuck with your insulin level. makes a huge difference.

stev0 06-04-2004 12:48 PM

Might not make you fat, but it'll raise your cholesterol and you'll die.. just like Dr. Atkins did.

I love threads about Atkins (similar to political threads).
People make outlandish statements..and of course, with no proof whatsoever other than, "my girlfirends brother's cousin's boss's housekeeper went on it and it killer her in 3 days!"

Ok, that makes 2 that have no clue what Atkins is really about.

Next?

m00d 06-04-2004 12:55 PM

calorie reduction has always worked and seemed less restrictive than atkin's for me

Here's #3!

Guess what ehulk? You don't ELIMINATE carbs from your diet with Atkins! You REDUCE them and eat HEALTHY types of carbs as opposed to starchy types!

I dont use this diet, have not read the books, but I am pretty sure Dr. Atkins fell down and cracked his melon.

ParasiteTV 06-04-2004 12:59 PM

There is no suck thing as a quick fix. I swim or run once a day for 1 hour. I eat grilled meats and veggies, & tons of egg whites.

The only way to lose weight and stay fit is to excercise like a motherfucker and not eat fatty/ super tasty foods.

that's it, that's all.

iFliPcEss 06-04-2004 01:02 PM

have a self discipline, don't eat fatty foods & those of with lots of carbohydrates then a little excercise

Its amazing how people dont have a clue, Dr Atkins died from slipping on the ice outside his apartment in NYC and hitting his head. Secondly it doesnt raise your cholestrol my father lost 50 lbs , lowered in cholestrol by 70 points and is off his blood pressure medication. If you dont read the book , you dont know the diet , my father is eating more vegetables now then he did his whole life.
