Quite an alarming look at the rise of murders in LA. Gang problems and how the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq plus the California budget problems are making fighting gangs a major problem.

What did alarm me was the rise in ambushing of police officers. Several weeks ago a kid actually shot a cop who was exiting a government building in broad daylight. When they caught the kid he said he did it to impress a street gang.

That shows you how fucked up things have gotten. We're talking above and beyond fucked up. The LA cops have a bad reputation and maybe it's coming back to haunt them. They've gotta settle this stuff fast or who knows what'll happen next.

gang members have definitely been taking out more cops.

in LA its part of the initiation to try and take out a cop.

standard now. thats why there are no fat donut eating cops here. they are paid to be in better shape and rated on everything.

i think an interesting stat was a friend of my philosophy teacher who was from compton enlisted to fight in the first persian gulf war. anyway, he had a higher chance of being killed where he was from (just living in south compton), then being in the persian gulf war. kind of interesting.

well I don't live in L.A. and if I did, I wouldn't be living anywhere near those neighborhoods.

And south central doesn't look too bad in the daytime..at least the crenshaw area doesn't.

The cops must have done some pretty fucked up thigns before ... things just dosen't look right there . Probably a lot of crooked mofos

Yeah, it's pretty bad. The other day they had half a block blocked off on Hollywood / Western with like 20 cop cars. Probably another shooting.

back in my days living in Venice Beach we used to watch the helicopters swoop down over "ghost town."

This was late 80's back during the initial rise of the street gangs.

There was one apartment complex so bad that cops were afraid to drive by it...gang bangers would just point out windows and shoot at them as they drove by and they could never figure out where it was coming from...so they had to hire the Fruit of Islam *the security division of the Nation of Islam* to come and patrol it for them.

i would have just set fire to the building..and then locked them all inside

Back in NY we had street gangs but nowhere near as bad as LA. It's primarily due to the fact that we had one-big-ass street gang called:

THE MAFIA

They took care of everything. Had a sense of honor and tradition and did not tolerate 'infamnias' meaning things that killed children.

I remember growing up and there were gangs from the bronx like the 'Savage Skulls' and they were no joke. You would rather them shoot you than get into a fist fight with these guys. They were hardbit two-fisted kids but they did have a sense of honor.

What you have here in Los Angeles is generations of people who've been robbed and humiliated by local and state government. Even the CIA came into town and armed these people and tried to deny it. I can see the gangmember's point of view because if you grow up knowing the cops nor the government care about you, then you can't care about them.

It's the ultimate collapse in trust of government.

We used to look at the history of gangs in Los Angeles. There were like 5 generations of people in gangs. How could it have gone on so long? Why no consolidation under a commission?

Normally gangs consolidate and move to legitimize but I guess in this region the fact that so many family structures are destroyed you have kids training kids to kill.

The government won't do shit til a rich famous white celebrity gets bumped off. Then they'll send in the 5th Battalion and make a lot of noise and act like they're doing something.

Just the thought that a kid, a KID, would gun down a decorated officer in BROAD FUCKING DAYLIGHT coming out of THE COURT HOUSE is enough to establish martial law. But nooOOOOoo, they buried the cop, locked up the kid and turned on the Rush Limbaugh Show and blamed the liberals, democrats and Clinton.

LA does have its own Mafia issues.

But unlike the idiot street gangs they aren't just out shooting cops for glory.

Kinda like when I lived on 3rd street next to the Hell's Angels building. Safest street in Manhattan.

I remember one night yearrrs ago me and a pal were walking past the Hell's Angel's HQ and we just said hi to the boys and we talked about comic books. They had read some of mine and we knew some biker pals from the old days. Then we headed uptown for a while and came back downtown and the next thing we knew the whole fucking block was covered in yellow tape and barriers. The cops had just raided that place. A huge bust.

Same with when the Westies were runnin' shit. They used to strongarm for the mob. You knew you're ass was had when the Westies came after you.

i had watched a show regarding GANGSTA in LA, and there are so many gangsta over there mostly are from different race, they said they get involve in such group so that they gonna have a protection against other gang/group or mafia. The scary part is, they need to undergo some really HARD initiation before they'll become a member

you fuck with someone in the jail, you /your family get targetted on the street by other gang members..gang members actually have telephone usage rules posted clearly by the phones..it is THAT bad

Y'know, our constitutional birthrights are supposed to guarantee safety from such gang activities. The reason you DON'T have these activities in the rich neighborhoods is because they use the law against the cops who let this shit get out of hand.

I remember doing a story back in the early 80s where in Westchester NY suburb one of the rich lawyers there told me on the side how they keep gangs out.

They sue the cops for negligence, indifference, compliance and or incompetence.

See, if you see criminal activity in an area of a felonious nature and you file a complaint, the authorities have a limited amount of time to correct the situation. Usually 30 to 90 days. If they don't, they have to by default kick it upstairs to the sherrif who then has a time limit. If the sheriff's dept. can't handle it, they by default have to kick it up to the state etc. It can take 6 months to a year but usually the state and feds have no choice by then. If you and the rest of the citizens find their response time and actions unsatisfactory you pile together and hit the authorities with umpteen lawsuits they can't afford to fight. So instead of them losing pay money they crack down hard on the gangs.

They do this in the rich neighborhoods because the rich neighborhoods have the money to put the cops in check. People in Brooklyn caught on years ago to this procedure and it was the first time I'd seen the Hassidic and Black communities agree on something.

That's how you get rid of gangs. Make it too expensive for the cops to look the other way.

The cops know that if they go into those areas people are going to die. If the cops get killed no big deal but kill a thug and all hell breaks loose.
