My brother used hypnosis with complete success to give up smoking (and also to get over his dislike/fear of dentists). Since I had proof it could be effective, I tried it myself.
I have no idea whether the results vary because the subject doesn't relate to every hypnotist or due to state of mind or whatever. But my visit to the hypnotist who worked so well for my brother, was a complete waste of time. Then a few weeks later I went to see another and it was like magic.
I had tried the usual ways to quit and they were all unpleasant and useless. One 20 minute session was all it took and I didn't suffer so much as a moment of the normal withdrawal symptoms.
So I can tell you from personal experience that hypnosis can be effective, but also warn you that even if it can help you, you might need to try more than one therapist or try more than once. As I said, I'm don't know why sometimes it works, sometimes not.
