How do you handle...

How do you handle working in front of the computer ALL day? I'm not talking about the guys who do this part time or only work a couple hours a day, I'm talking about the guys (and girls) who put FULL days in front of their computer.

Some days I get to the point where my mind gets completely jammed and I can't think straight. It's crazy and starting to drive me up a tree!

How do you guys handle it?

freeadultcontent 06-02-2004 05:53 PM

Take a break, go outside with a cold drink and just vegg. I must do this at least a few times a week.

detoxed 06-02-2004 05:54 PM

marijuana

FlyingIguana 06-02-2004 05:54 PM

go outside for a walk around the block or something. get some fresh air.

samuel 06-02-2004 05:55 PM

The thing I do is going somewhere I'm very far from my computer.. so I can get relaxed and rest my eyes and brain..

I dont work behind a computer all day anymore, but when I did I just stopped every hour for a break. Take a walk or something

WiredGuy 06-02-2004 05:55 PM

Change up your tasks every couple of hours. I got enough keyword lists to filter to last me a solid month or more. Once I go beserk from filtering, I switch it up with some PPC management or some perl scripts or simply coming to GFY.

Anything to mix it up so you don't go nuts.

I take a nap or a walk or something along those lines.

gym in the afternoon one day... go to the pub the next day... repeat

wyldblyss 06-02-2004 06:10 PM

I work 8 to 5 in the business at the office...I come home...sit right back down and start working on my own projects. I take breaks though once I am home doing things like throwing a load of wash in....running back and forth from computer to stove cooking dinner...and I always try to take a least a half hour weekdays to fiddle in the garden to keep my sanity.

Weekends are basically the same thing but more break times for housework, yard etc. Once the weather improves I am bound and determined to spend more time outside enjoying the summer and the pool.

mastamind 06-02-2004 06:12 PM

take brakes ever couple hours

m00d 06-02-2004 06:19 PM

frequent breaks, maintaining a routine and schedule

Steve 06-02-2004 06:22 PM

I burn myself out and then I fuck off for long stretches of time

I could lie and say I have a routine, but that is about it - I overwork myself until I dont know WTF is going on - then I am a useless drooling veggie for a bit.

grumpy 06-02-2004 06:51 PM

I go fishing then and call it a day.

Jeff aka NIGHTfall 06-02-2004 07:23 PM

dont bother me much.. when i get bored, i hit up a flash/shockwave game for a few mins, then get back to work... if my eyes hurt, i go lay down for a 30min break.. if screen is to bright, i just wear sunglasses... this is my only job, im 18 and i make at least 2x more then my friends who push more then 40hours a week. Alot of people assume because i am on the computer all day that i am not actually doing work, they think its all fun and games. and yes, i admit, i love this job, i have a blast posting here and making new contacts and friends, but it still is a job.:2 cents:

NaughtyAllie 06-02-2004 07:30 PM

Jake and I work all day in front of the computer 7 days a week. We take one break to go to the gym each day. It can get very stressful and sometimes a little yelling and cursing occur. Once I hit my breaking point I start to think about working for someone else and then everything seems okay. :)

mandrake 06-02-2004 07:37 PM

its easy...smoke 40 cigs a day drink heaps of coffee and when it all gets to much i just go for a nice quick burn around the block

I have no problem with it. I like it and it's better paid then any other '' regular '' job. I pick my own times and it's 4.40 midnight here and i'm still working a bit.

:thumbsup

My eye doctor told me that working on the computer all day long is like watching T.V. and gave me some eye excises which really helped.

When I take my breaks, I do not watch T.V. :)

I do pretty good for a long time and then I have to go do something else for a day or I'll go completely mad. When I have things to do and can't do anything but sit and stare at the screen wondering where to start, that's when it is time for a break. I usually go and play a video game for a day, rent some movies, go for a drive, out to dinner or ANYTHING that doesn't involve any thought processes whatsoever. LOL

I do good for about 2-3 weeks at a time without a day off, but then I have to have a day, and sometimes two........ otherwise I just spin my wheels and that loses me more time than just taking a day off. :1orglaugh

Walk around every once in awhile...

I also find closing your eyes with a pillow over them to block out the light for 10-15 mins every couple hours helps with the eye strain.

I thought that's what poosting on GFY was for ??????????

SeTec 06-02-2004 08:16 PM

I used to be a UNIX admin at a place called the advanced technology labs. It used to get to me pretty good, I regulary did 10+ hr days. I had a huge office, but it had no windows. In fact, the whole building had no windows. I got no cell service. All I did all day as stare at a couple of 21 in SUN monitors with 4 or 5 shell sessions going. But I guess I did kinda like it, and to be honest, I would do that job again if it paid better.

Also taking a lengthy break in the afternoon, getting outside, swimming, to a friends house. Go play a quick 9 hole game of golf.

go outside and take a walk once in awhile. the weather is awesome here!

phogirl69 06-02-2004 08:41 PM

I handled it by going back to school a few days a week, it really motivates me to wake up in the morning, otherwise I would just sleep until 2pm sometiemes even 5pm in the afternoon and get my sleeping schedule all messed up. It also helps me motivate my time better, because if I have school work to do, I finish my web work faster so it motivates me. Before, sometimes I would sit in front of the pc ALL day and not DO ANYTHING except surf gfy, check stats and waste time.

Next semester I will only be going to school 2x a week, since it's far for me to commute, but it also helps me to go outside and see the sun once in awhile. Sometimes when I work on the pc all day and I go outside, it feels weird because I forgot what the damn sun feels like, it feels so bright!

I vary my work and take a break when I need to. I spend time with my wife and daughter, work out and sometimes I even eat instead of working 24/7. :Graucho

Number 1 thing.. a good chair. I see people posting their desks and whatnot and they have those 30 dollar walmart task chairs and the like.

Ahhh it must be nice to be young.

eroswebmaster 06-03-2004 06:54 AM

I know what you mean Sly...I'll go 12-14 hours a day up to 7 days a week sometimes and after awhile the ol' well just dries up.

I was taking weekends off for awhile, but then when my sister wrecked the car my having to run all the family errands it cut into my time so I had to push my schedule back into the weekends.

Not working on the weekends really helped.

And when I say "not working," I'm specificallly referring to designing for others...because honestly on those weekends I'd be right back in my office but doing something else like learning new skills, reading up on tips or just going wild on the message boards.

A good chair is a must...in fact I've just resigned myself to the fact that I will probably have to buy a new one once every 6 months or so.

When I do buy one I like to buy them at office depot because they have them rated for length of time that you should sit in them before getting up to take a break.
Office Max doesn't give you this information and last time I bought a chair from them it didn't last 6 months.
