Where to start with Search Engines....

I have been wanting to start doing SE traffic but i have no clue where to start. Ive been to the SE forums and all that jibberish seems to go right over my head. I would just like to get my feet wet. Can someone help with what Search Engine to start with and what approach to take? Thank you in advance!

Your ideea is great but be more specific. What kind of SE do u want to build????
A regular one or something to fit in a low profile???
Anyway my advice is to do it with ORACLE (yahoo.com is made with it and it works perfect)

With the way SEs are updating lately, you will need a lot of time to get your feet wet. Start off by making a site that is very similar in design to one that you would submit to link lists - i.e. a warning page, main page, and a couple of galleries. Choose 2 or 3 keywords that the site is about and place these keywords in your title, URL, and meta tags. Then on the warning page, use descriptive text describing what is inside of the site making sure that these keywords are prominent in this descriptive text. You can also place these keywords in ALT tags and name your images with these keywords. You'll probably also want to scatter the inside of the site with these keywords.

Once you've done all of this, submit the warning page to all the major SEs plus DMOZ. You'll probably find that within a couple of weeks, you'll be listed on Altavista, Google and DMOZ. The rest of the SEs, it could take up to 6 months. Once you get listed on Altavista and Google, you can check your rank by doing searches for your keywords. And now you will have your feet slightly wet. From that point on, it's just a matter of experimenting with different things like keyword density, layout, themes and a bunch of other shit in order to get better rankings - and of course, each SE uses its own algorithm for determining ranking.

The bonus of getting listed in DMOZ is that within a couple of months, SEs like AOL and Netscape will pick up your site.

You know, I submitted like 5 months ago for yahoo, back when it was free, and finally I got my listing. Number 5 if you use the right keywords...
