There is probably more self-serving BS talked by the pro-drug camp than by the other side.
First off, your source. He isn't some cool guy nice enough to supply you with weed as a favor. He or the people behind him are in a serious business and there are other drugs they are hoping you will move on to. Although there is money in selling weed, there is more, easier money selling the stuff to which people do get addicted. Back in the 70's I knew several people who gave marijuana away at college parties, watched for the heavy users and then moved in to try to sell them other drugs. Often gave them away too at first: made out like a buddy and then became their source once they were hooked. Sometimes students were paid to give "samples" away to other kids and point them to where they could get more. I doubt the scene has changed much, except that according to my kids, these days it is happening in high schools too. And the chances are that if you know anyone who is addicted to crack or whatever, you know someone who started out on "soft" drugs, got comfortable with the idea of using, and then wanted (or was persuaded that they wanted) a more vivid experience. Sure that doesn't happen to the majority of smokers and you could argue that anyway people should be free to f*ck up their lives if that's what they want to do. Nice idea, except that the truly addictive drugs are also expensive and the rest of us don't get a choice. We pay the cost of feeding drug habits by becoming the victims of muggings, burglaries, car thefts, etc. Screw that. Let kids find some a way to be "cool" that the rest of us don't pick up the tab for. I doubt we can win a "War on Drugs" now, even if there were a serious attempt to do so. There's just too much money involved and no real will. We talk about the "drug culture" as if it were as harmless as listening to music, instead of recognizing that it is about peoples' weaknesses being exploited for big $$$. But I would like to start by having drug sellers charged with attempted murder and all drug users facing a Class 1 felony with a minimum 10 year jail sentence. That should make me popular on here :) |
