Anyone use layers in Dreamweaver?

Any Dreamweaver experts out there? I love using layers in dreamweaver but it comes out fucked on old browsers. My dreamweaver book says you can clean up the code so that it displays properly. Any of you guys dreamweaver pro's?

sweetjimmy,

not a total pro but I have that solution somewhere. and I will get it to ya. it has to do with layer names and such. but I what I mainly do is this.

1.Build the page like I want in layers.
2.Save it exp index.htm.
3.hit the covert layers into tables.
4.then save it as index2.htm
Then on the index.htm add a behavior on the body tag to check for older browsers and redirect them to index2

Thanks buddy. I have a dreamweaver book but i'm to lazy to read it. I just wanted to see if its worth the effor learning all that shit.

How are layers working for you anyhow? A thing i like to do with layers is make a 600x800 layer and put the rest of the layers inside.

layers use up too much bandwidth. you can acomplish anything you want in tables. I've used dreamweaver 2,3, now 4 ultradev for over a year. I've used layers, i've also converted back and forth between layers and tables. it was a tough decision. but in the end, you have to decide which is more cost efficient for you and your purpose. Would layers really make your site more money? probably not but maybe it would make your site look better! granted...but the rule still applies... KISS = keep it simple stupid. tables should work just fine and it's faster to do. if you want to work in layers that's fine.. convert back to tables... although you understand that if you convert layers back into tables, your whole site will be FILLED with tables... it's a web of tables...which also makes it incredibly hard to redesign few minor details should they arise. your best bet? use tables from the beginning.

my 2 cents. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

hope it helped.

oh yeah, plus you run into the compatibility issues with old browsers. make a site everyone can view...

seal all your holes. let every surfer in! but don't let any surfer leave without clicking on a sponsor or a link trade.

maximize and be efficient.

yeah, try to stay away from layers, besides old browsers Web-TV completely fucks them up.

sweetjimmy,

For porn sites I wouldn't waste the time. just make the table. I use a 95% width. and design with 800x600 in mind.

if you plan on making a no-porn site that is targeted for mainly the newer browsers and with all the neato plugins go for it. Them DHTML junkies like that kind of shit. *L* but with my dail up speed being so slow I tend to shy away from them.
