dont know how to build a free site - get the fuck outta the industry

so this guy just sent me his resume a couple of days ago for a support position he has a shitload of great credentials that all got checked out and he looked like what we are after so i arranged a quick interview over the phone..

anyway we got into the interview process (despite his kids running riot in the background) and he seemed to be a guy we would have no problems adding to our staff anyway...

as it happens despite the fact this guy has worked for several high profile companies as an affiliate rep and his references were good it got to the part about what his physical skills were so far as the type of work he had done that he hadnt mentioned in his resume...

html - never coded in his life
traffic - never submitted a tgp gallery in his life or free site
content - never bought any
sponsors - never used any
hosting - used a free host

i mean wtf? you expect to get a job as a support rep but when it comes down to it you know NOTHING about how the industry works from a practical standpoint

heres a hint for everyone.. if you are looking for work and have no hands on skills as an actual 'webmaster' get the fuck outta this industry you bring nothing to it but your body mass

how the fuck can you help one of my webmasters if you dont know shit about html, hosting, traffic, sponsors or content?

seems like there are a lot of people like this guy in the industry wondering why thy havent got a full time job with a company.. the reason is.. you are nothing more than a bottom feeding loser who has no skills but is able to talk the talk riding on other peoples reputations

MattK 05-31-2004 12:27 PM

If he's never done any of those things...

How does he give support? :helpme

jact 05-31-2004 01:07 PM

I think nearly every account rep I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with is exactly what you're describing here. No practical experience whatsoever in the industry, yet they're supposed to be "helping" their affiliates improve?

Now, there are several notable exceptions, and this isn't a rule by any means, but it is running rampant in the industry.

sexsup 05-31-2004 01:07 PM

Maybe he did a totally different job in that big companies

he answers all the silly questions and hands off anything of substance to higher ups?

HS-Trixxxia 05-31-2004 01:33 PM

Maybe he is too skilled in other departments and it's on those credentials that he was hired with the other companies.

Dawgy 05-31-2004 01:40 PM

i know program owners who cant do any of that shit

i never understood how so many ppl who seem largely clueless about the adult internet get hired. tho i assume being female plays a large part it in for some companies. but it sucks when you more about the sponsor than the rep does.

True, which goes to show that you dont necessarily have to know the tech stuff to get the job done. Does larry flynt know how to build freesites and should he leave the industry if he doesnt? And this biz changes so fast that what somebody did a few years ago often has no relevance today anyway. A rep is a representative, which means he represents others, its usually those others that are doing the actual technical stuff. The reps job is to act as an interface, to expedite things, provide information etc. Communication and people skills are probably a lot more important than tech experience. It depends on the individual person though, they do need to be able to quickly pick up on how things are done and what the real scoop is.
And besides, if he had practical experience why isnt he still doing those things? Could it be that he wasnt worth a fuck? Having practical experience at doing things poorly is maybe worse than no experience at all.

Dont know what kind of ad you ran ? but you could have done a pre qualified one..

Most webmaster ad's ask for prior urls and all that you mentioned.
and how long doing this type of work.

Next time make a form with all that you can think of, before running ad's wasting time on the phone.

my :2 cents:

which was what we did lol

we ran it on several of the adult job sites and had close to 20 applications out of all of them we narrowed it down to 3 people who HAD prior 'affiliate support' experience with several of the LARGE players in the adult industry

i will repeat that again in case you missed it...

3 people ho have worked for LARGE players doing the EXACT same thing as what this job entailed without any knowledge of how to be a webmaster themselves

how can you help my affiliates if you dont know how to code a html page, where to get content, where to go for hosting, what sponsors are working, et al

if im going to trust someone to do the support for *MY* business i want to make sure that even though they may have previously worked for other adult companies they know more than just how to post on a message board which is what so many of these applicants expected the role to be

would you go to a rep at ars, plat bucks, ce etc and expect the guy you were talking to not to have any clue about the stuff you were going to ask him for help on? no. well you would be surprised ;)

im not trusting anyone to do support for my program if they dont know how to code a simple fucking tgp gallery least submit the damn thing for traffic im not going to pay someone to learn from my affiliates what they should already know being in an 'affiliate support' position for the last 3 years at various companys

done it all. how much you paying?

SoundMan 05-31-2004 11:09 PM

Sounds like a good job with little requirements.

you should have no problem filling it..

Global Dialers 05-31-2004 11:09 PM

what adult sponsors have you previously worked for

recent experience has given me a list of a few large ones to never hire any employees from ;)

Rictor 06-01-2004 12:04 AM

Yah, sales rep really shouldn't be an entry level position if you want one that's worth paying. I mean you can have a million clueless guys working on commission only, but if you're going to give them an hourly salary, they should know their shit.
