tiptronic on cars.

My friend told me if you use the manual a lot on the car it breaks the transmission. Is that true ?

newbreed 05-31-2004 01:16 AM

Generally no, but it depends a lot on what kind of driving you do. Abusive or aggresive shifting wears parts out quicker.

kmanrox 05-31-2004 01:17 AM

i dont know... when i was test driving a porsche with it it sucked... doesnt give you the feel of the car like a manual.. as far as the possible flaw in tiptronic do a search on google, you'll find links to auto forums with info i bet.

Chaldoray 05-31-2004 01:19 AM

ok thanks, yeah i don't drive it aggressive i shift around when it hits 5 rpm

:eek7 , why 5k? for normal driving i shift inbetween 2.5 - 3 no need to really take any car up to 5 unless you're racing

emthree 05-31-2004 01:22 AM

I Highly Doubt it - I've never heard of any problems along the lines from normal useage. I'm pretty sure it could become a future issue if you're dogging it and not shifting properly.

I have steptronic on the BM3 Series, never had any trouble.

Chaldoray 05-31-2004 01:24 AM

the dealer said to shift around 4 or 4.5

Semi-Retired-Dave 05-31-2004 01:24 AM

I have it on my Benz, and no troubles.

Chaldoray 05-31-2004 01:24 AM

it only goes up to 4 the gears

I have had it in my cars for years, I have used it about 3 times. I think its just a selling point. I downshift and play with the gears when racing but never with the triptronic.

What kind of car is it? Different engines have different power bands, small engines require high reving to move. Big engines have more torque, so they don't need to be reved as high.

Honda S2000 for instance needs to be taken to 7,000 to REALLY move. But a Corvette for instance would only need 2,000 realistically.

As a general rule of thumb, American transmissions go out quickly, along with all the other parts too. Honda's literally will last forever... and I'm not exadurating. My '92 Civic has 220k miles and I drive it fast, but not hard, and it's never had any major problems and runs great to this day.

I think the Ford transmission is number one on the list of Trannys taking a shit.

JaveWolf 05-31-2004 01:45 AM

Audi A8 didn't had any trouble with it.
But, I hardly used it.
Personally I think it's bullshit that tiptronic on a car.

So tiptronic is not for everyday use ?

jacked 05-31-2004 09:31 AM

you can use it it's just a matter of if your gonna beat on it its like any car if you treat the car good and don't jump on the gas and shift real hard its not gonna fuck up the transmission but if you shift normal like 3k-3500 rpms then your not stressing the transmission no breaking of the car

cayne 05-31-2004 09:32 AM

I don't like tiptronic...go manual for full-automatic.

Mr Pheer 05-31-2004 10:35 AM

Your 160hp engine is not going to break the transmission in your little front wheel drive Mazda. Use it all you want.

Chaldoray 05-31-2004 01:30 PM

i don't get why everyone says it will break your transmission if you use it a lot, then what's the point of it.

Tiptronic is for GIRLS.............Looked at nice Porche Cabriolet the other day, it was nice right up to the point of me seeing it was automatic. I talked to the dealer about it today, he said mostly women drive them :winkwink:

yes, its rated as a compact car. therefor it is little.

If you dont believe it is little, compare its size to a fullsize truck or SUV, or a fullsize sedan. Dont take it as insult. I called it little because its simply not large.

depends on the car

stevo 05-31-2004 02:10 PM

I use it more to slow down. Instead of hitting the breaks i prefer to drop it a gear.

Illicit 05-31-2004 02:13 PM

I beat the shit out of my car, no problems with it

DrGuile 05-31-2004 02:22 PM

I usually shift at 5500rpm... and I only really get all the power around 7000rpm

Ross 05-31-2004 03:42 PM

TIPTRONIC OWNS

Semi-Retired-Dave 05-31-2004 04:46 PM

Bottom line is, if it has it built in, its made to be used a lot.
I am just telling you out of my experience, I don't use mine much and I am sure you won't either. just learn the stick shift or get the auto.
