Any tips for doing my first paysite tour design myself?

It's for a regular straight hardcore site.

I dont know if I should do a very basic simple amateurish design with no background and hope that the content does the talking, or should I try to jazz it up with some bells and whistles?

And I dont know if I should go with a dark background, or a light background.

To be honest when I look at the sponsors who make money, when they put out a site the sites are gorgeous, so that makes me think if I want to make money too then I should put out a gorgeous site and nothing amateurish. Or they could just be putting out a gorgeous site to keep affiliates happy.

some sites that are really simple make tons, whereas others that are really glamorous with the whole image designs do too.

Its your decision on how to play it

I am working on the same thing I say it's about your content

hire a professional designer.

why people still assume the only thing that matters about a site is whether to make it pretty or not is mystifying.

a site is supposed to sell. Period.

Pay designers is my suggestion too. They know what they do and it makes the difference

I would if I could but I need it done before monday, so Im doing it myself.
Plus I think it's good to do your first one yourself to see what works and what doesnt.

The most important issue is not the design but to make sure people understand exactly what the content is while giving as little free samples away as possible.

If you make them spend too much time looking at the graphics rather than the content that is like saying I don't have much content so here's some graphics you can pay for.
