Computer freaks: processor question here
was looking at getting dual Xeons with Hyperthreading.....
is that not as good as say, a 3.x Ghz single P4 with hyperthreading? (the duals would be 2.x Ghz) I just want the maximum performance I can get, so throw me a bone here. |
the single would undoubtedly be cheaper....
but I want to get as good as I can get.... so whichever setup is better is the key. |
Depends what you are doing with it really..

Yeah 2 xeons would probably be a bit better.. really what you should look at is one of the athlon 64 high end chips.. (3200+ or 3400+) those are smoking for graphics, and games.. which are pretty much the same thing these days. :)

Photoshop 7 performance DUAL CPU
Photoshop 7 performance SINGLE CPU According to these tests a Dual Xeon with 2.X is slower than a single P4, 3.0 for photoshop. Not too surprising the Xeons do not scale well P4 3.0 for the best price/performance Dual Opteron for best performance |

I would go with the P4..

Go with duel athlon 64.
Use a decen't size heat sink. They are cheaper. I have used p4's and Athlons XP's I have "heard great reviews with A64's" Run the System on Hyper X Ram |

If you go with the dual make sure you get a very good motherboard. :2 cents:
|
hmmm..... i don't understand how a single CPU can outperform a dual setup...
but the 4gb of ram is what I most want. I just figgered twin CPUs would boost it that much more. |
so now I'm looking at:
IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 Processor Extreme Edit. 3.40GHz, 2MB L3 Cache (still with 4gb of ram) |
I'm a designer also..
my working rig: Athlon 64bit 3400+ Abit KV8-MAX3 motherboard 1GB Kingston ddr500 ram 2 x 80 gb maxtors with 8mb cashe in SATA raid Ati 9600PRO 2 x Samsung 174T LCD displays chieftec case 1000VA ups super stable. super fast! |
#1 Rule, Intel Only

the funny part is, no matter what you get, when it's all set up, you're not going to notice the difference.
4gigs of ram seems a bit overkill. |

:) uhm, paid $130 for the Chieftec Dragon... http://www.overclockercafe.com/Revie.../pics/1001.jpg Mine is black though the UPS is the cheap part, SWEEX, and I cant find the model #, that's why I can't install the floppy drivers from it. It was $80 or so. anyways: http://mail.net.mk/bdkox/pc1.jpg http://mail.net.mk/bdkox/pc2.jpg |

c'mon dude. 4 g's of RAM is far less overkill and much more justified than that 200 pound monster monitor you got there. |

but i'm not using it anymore : ) |

except when I click on a system, it goes 404 on me. |
