Student Sues University After Caught Cheating

A student who was booted off his degree course for plagiarism is to sue the university. He says tutors at the University of Kent should have spotted what he was doing and stopped him sooner.

Michael Gunn, a 21-year-old English student, freely admits using material downloaded from the Internet to complete his assignments. He told the Times: "I hold my hands up. I did plagiarise. I never dreamt it was a problem."

His problem, then, is not that he was caught, but that he was caught too late. He argues that the university should have warned him of the consequences earlier.

"I can see there is evidence I have gone against the rules," he concedes. "But they have taken all my money for three years and pulled me up the day before I finished. If they had pulled me up with my first essay at the beginning and warned me of the problems and consequences, it would be fair enough."

University authorities wouldn't comment directly on the case stressed that the university is very clear on the subject. David Nightingale, the deputy vice-chancellor said: "All students are given clear guidelines as well as practical advice and support as to what constitutes plagiarism. These spell it out that it is not acceptable under any circumstances."

ignorance isn't an excuse but if he can prove that they let him ride out the entire year knowing that he was plagirising the whole time isn't that sort of cheating someone of there money?

DarkJedi 05-28-2004 03:49 PM

if he can somehow prove they knew about it beforehand and waited a while to collect money from him, then has could have a case.

now proving it would be very difficult.

stev0 05-28-2004 04:30 PM

oh man... what a dumbass. I was going to say it amazes me how these people even make it into university, but i think i know the answer to that one.

If you consider that a college degree now costs well over $100,000, the university should suck his dick. I don't get it. Universities are in the business of making money. You are buying a service. Fuck them. Who cares if you cheat? You are paying to be there.

aaron 05-28-2004 04:40 PM

it hurts the integrity of the institution if they allow people to cheat. for every cheater that they boot out, they can replace them with someone who wanted in and they declined.

Umm next time you see a doctor or hire someone with a degree think that statement over again.

merlin77 05-28-2004 04:45 PM

You have got to be fucking kidding me. He gets caught, and instead of taking responsibility for his actions he is putting the blame on the university for not catching him sooner? Fuck off! This is the biggest load of horseshit I have heard in a long time. That's like getting caught shoplifting, and when you get caught saying well it's not my fault, had you been able to catch me one of the other hundred times I stole from you we wouldn't be in this spot right now! Bullshit!!!!!

1. You're a fucking douche bag. The guy is English.
2. Plagurism isn't illegal, it's against Uni/School rules and policy [in this context]
3. He'll probably win.

FiReC 05-28-2004 05:17 PM

so why the fuck didn't they boot him out right away? take his money for 3 years after the incident? thats just fucked up.

If people just bought degrees, they'd have no meaning. He should suck the University's dick for being a brainless twit. You're not buying a service. You're buying the right to be educated, and it's your job to absorb what they teach.

It amazes me that people try and make money off of cases like this daily. It also amazes me that so many of these idiots actually win these cases. :feels-hot

And how is he going to possibly prove that?

It's not like he was told or caught plagarising before.

There are plenty of inept doctors and lawyers. Getting a good grade in college isn't difficult or buying a fake diploma is easy. Everyone cheats once or twice during a four year stint in college. This guy cheated in one class not in every single class.

er... buying the 'right' is a contradiction of terms. A right is something given at birth. How can you buy something you already have?

EviLGuY 05-28-2004 06:03 PM

LOL... what a fucking tool. These are the kinds of people that will be running things in 20-30 years too.

reynold 05-28-2004 06:18 PM

What was his course anyway? He should be studying law! :1orglaugh

Doctor Dre 05-28-2004 06:21 PM

He might be right ... if the university bust him at the last moment and knew about it till the start, they have just taken his money

maxdaname 05-28-2004 06:45 PM

Woooow! He Better not win this!
