The solution to the 'search' problem!

.....(maybe)

I posted this as a reply to another thread, but im hoping Lens and other mods will see this.

I assume the problem is how much CPU resources are used when theres so many people searching this main forum, which is hundreds of pages long.

So heres an idea....

Move threads that havent been replied to for 3 months or more into an "Archives" forum.

This would mean when people search the "Fucking Around & Program Discussion" forum, the CPU would have way less data to sort through.

When people wanted to specifically search for an old topic, they'd goto the 'Archives' section.

Unless im mistaken, this should solve the problem.

Xplicit 05-27-2004 02:25 PM

Ok, I guess we'll just ignore it and continue to sort through the clusterfuck we call GFY.

...At least until everyone gets sick of it and decides to goto a board that works right.

scottie0779 05-27-2004 02:29 PM

Yeah, but would we have to manually search the archives as we have to do the whole board now? If you shove the old stuff into another board on the same server *with* search enabled on the new board too, same problem. If you don't enable search on the old posts...? as a newbie, i'm sure there's a fount of information back there that would be useful, if only i could find it by keyword. If server load is the problem, i don't see a quick resolution. :(

hm it could work..

1. vBulletin archives ALL posts after X amount of days/weeks/whatever. Not just posts that haven't been replied to

2. Archived Links are STILL available in regular page browsing, depending on how many days back vBulletin itself is set to display.

3. Search feature doesn't differentiate between archived links and main site links, search will search everything so it's basically moot

No, you could search the archives seperately. It would just be a seperate FORUM on the same board.

Althrough people COULD search the entire board still, I bet %99 of searches are only done on one paticular forum.

So no, my idea would still work and free up a lot of CPU power. :2 cents:

ill vote for anything that brings back search!

I just added a GFY folder to my bookmarks and I bookmark threads that I want to keep up with.....

there ain't that many threads believe it or not in that folder...

Search is a key feature.

We can't monitor the board 24 hours a day and search lets us pull up useful stuff when we are able to visit.

And it increases the exposure of the ads you are running.

So let me ask a question: Why not just spring for additional hardware? You can get a pretty powerful box these days for $1000 (or less). That works out to only about $80 a month.

Can GFYs earnings cover $80/mo?

frankfortuna 05-27-2004 03:17 PM

Replicate the data to another box that has a read only version of the forum with search enabled.

Not a bad idea either.

Seriously, people are gonna start leaving this place soon if it stays like this.

I'm also sick of the whole "Search works again!"... then two days later, its down.

i doubt it....it has been down for way longer than this before, and no one ever leaves

some people leave, believe me.

BTW, it's not only a question of monitoring interesting threads.

It often happens that webmaster A starts a stupid thread, webmaster B replies with a comment, webmaster C sees this thread 2 hrs later and tells webmaster B something important, assuming that webmaster B will get back to that thread.

I may post every day in about 15-20 threads and usually I open the next day at least half of them again.

Without the search feature it is not possible and i feel lost :(

I donno, I know a few WMs who have started posting here less to move onto other forums.

I'm still addicted to GFY, but with it being such a pain to navigate and follow up on posts with the search feature going on and off every week is starting to get old. :(

I believe it is do to an exploit problem and not an amount of users problem.
