Haha congrats to Howard Carmack :1orglaugh I wish him nice days in jail

stev0 05-27-2004 12:54 PM

Good to hear! Let the spammer sit in prison and think about how many people he's annoyed and how many combined hours he's wasted.

Carmack sent out hundreds of millions of bulk e-mail messages, flooding inboxes and saddling Internet providers with millions of dollars in costs. But it was his use of stolen identities and forged addresses that caused him to run afoul of state prosecutors.

He went to jail for identity theft and forgery. Quote above from article....

i think they were just looking for something to charge him with. since they couldn't just charge him with 'spamming' they charged him with identity theft. sounds like bullshit. maybe he stole AOL accounts or something. either way it seems like bullshit. i can't believe ppl are willing to lock up ppl just because they send emails they don't want. now if they were doing those ebay/paypal scams, sure.

Lane 05-27-2004 01:34 PM

hmm, is it because of spoofing?

KRosh 05-27-2004 01:34 PM

it wasn't the spamming that put him in jail

"Carmack sent out hundreds of millions of bulk e-mail messages, flooding inboxes and saddling Internet providers with millions of dollars in costs.
But it was his use of stolen identities and forged addresses that caused him to run afoul of state prosecutors. New York has no state laws specifically dealing with spam, according to the Web site Spamlaws.com, and a national anti-spam law was not yet in place when Carmack was arrested a year ago. "

PrivateEye 05-27-2004 01:34 PM

Goverment shoulda just fined him and let him keep going :1orglaugh

Wait a year and come back and take another cut :thumbsup

Can they charge you with a crime for using a fake return address on emails? Maybe they can if that address is owned by someone else?

CAHEK 05-27-2004 01:39 PM

1 down and 636 to go
