We do it inside and it has tended to increase retention as the freaks can talk amongst themselves in their little "community" Moderated but never needed to delete anything.

inside works the best

It's ideal for knowing what's on your member's mind. If they put their critics in it, things they would like to see, etc etc, you can use that to improve the site... which makes your site retention better!

I would not.

I wouldn't put it on the outside unless you want to moderate it heavily. You'll get all kind of shit posters and spammers if left in the open.

Most message boards i have seen inside members areas are not very busy at all. I would suggest a journal type of a board. I personally use grey matter for mine and it helps keep the guys involved and lets them post back to me very easily.

If its on the outside, you're paying for chat that isnt neccessarily helping you in any way, and the moderation work will increase a lot.

Keeping it as a value-added for the members seems like a better idea.

I used a real time chat room way back in the day when I was doing paysites. Don't think it would have made a difference whether I kept it or took it off. Unless you have heavy member traffic, it's probably not much of a value-added service to the member.

Our message boards are inside the protected area as well. Doesn't get too much traffic, though it's starting to grow. The fun one is movie reviews we implemented. Reading some of the stuff that our users are writing while watching a porn flick is pretty funny. Both are relatively easy to moderate as most members tend to be on the level and not assholes.

I would definitely keep it moderated

Take these two from this morning from users reviewing a clip:

"one of the best threesomes on this site. I will never be able look at two women the same way again after this. My wife better get one of her girlfriends over tomorrow so we can try to recreate this event"

:2 cents: Inside agreed. That's where ours will ALWAYS be! (shameless plug @ lightspeed -- he pulled it off rather creatively, listing a central board for all sites... MHO)

Besides, outside that board will milk bandwidth. Push it as a feature in your tour, save the bandwidth for the ppl actually paying you :thumbsup
