What's the best counter?

I need to monitor traffic on numerous domains, spread over several hosts.

What's the best 3rd-party counter and why?

My favourite trick is to put 1x1 px uniquely named gifs there, then run a script over the access logs using the requests for each of those gifs to establish where the traffic went. Its a bit of an intense solution, so I could see how you'd want an established solution though..

Thanks TheFrog, I've done that previously and it's definitely an option.

But I'd still like to know about 3rd-party counters. Anyone?
