Ceiling fan bolts broke loose and the whole damn thing came spinning off

like some evil destruction bound Hell wing looking for blood.....

(no pics... I'm injured. just able to reach the keyboard in posting desperation as I gasp in my last few dying breaths)

(ok, maybe not the last few.... but it still hurts.)

bluedevil 05-27-2004 12:42 AM

damn are you ok? hospital?

twistyneck 05-27-2004 12:43 AM

I always wondered what would happen if one of those things came loose. Ours are kind of wobbly looking, it probably wouldn't hurt to look them over.

if it's wobbly, look out..... this one was wobbly for a long time and I never gave it much thought......

now I know.

this office fan was the only one I hadn't replaced. Fucker clocked me.

BV 05-27-2004 12:48 AM

that's why i always make sure mine is blowing downwards and not in reverse, so if it breaks loose it will just hover down slowly.

KRL 05-27-2004 12:53 AM

Damn, that's scary Amp. Glad you're ok. If you had that on high speed I imagine those things could have sliced your head off.

Whoa. Just thinking how freaky that would be cause then your nick would have been your destiny for fame.

TheFrog 05-27-2004 01:06 AM

Doesnt sound very fun. Lucky I live in a climate where a ceiling fan wouldnt be much use :)

kelly 05-27-2004 01:07 AM

Shit, if it really did whack you on the head you should get yourself checked out - take care.

nofx 05-27-2004 01:09 AM

happened to my cousin when he was a little kid. he was in his bed looking up and his ceiling fan came un bolted all of a sudden and landed right on him. he is scared to death of ceiling fans still.
He took the one in his bedroom out of his house cause he doesnt want it to happen again.

That was some great story telling!

boardersweetie 05-27-2004 01:14 AM

Be careful Amp!!! If it didn't knock you out or anything, you're most likely fine. But grab and mirror and see if your pupils look even. If you start feeling nautious or dizzy, go to the ER. Take care!!

Jeff aka NIGHTfall 05-27-2004 01:39 AM

Yikes.. that's scary.

I have a somewhat similar story..

You know those little light covers that people sometimes have over the ceiling lights in their bedrooms as a shade? Bout a foot square of glass? I was laying in my bed when I was a kid.. and one of them shattered right over top of me.

I missed losing an eye by about an inch. Been paranoid about stuff dropping on me ever since.

Icy 05-27-2004 02:10 AM

Damn i always think on that on Saturdays night at an overcrowded club here in my city, it has 3 very lose ceiling fans over the crowd and i always think on how much heads it can cut if they fall off.
I hope you're ok and that your head is still over your shoulders.

Mishi 05-27-2004 02:33 AM

Would have been a better story if it had hovered just over your head for a moment before launching into orbit, never to be seen again...

UNTIL...

Sorry, I'm really, really bored.

Glad there were no decapitations.

kowntafit 05-27-2004 03:01 AM

I've seen so many loose ceiling fans and thought about how much it would suck if you were under it when it fell. This is the first one I have heard of falling. There is probably a statistic somewhere about how many people get injured by falling ceiling fans each year. Hope you're alright.

KittyLix 05-27-2004 03:12 AM

fucking owwwwwwwww

CamChicks 05-27-2004 04:42 AM

a few years ago, I was in the room when just one of the fins of a ceiling fan flew off . . . put a nice dent in the wall :helpme everybody make sure your screws are tight. :uhoh

hova 05-27-2004 04:47 AM

Damn! I always wondered if my ceiling fan could do that. Now I cant turn it on without thinking about it choppin my beautiful head of

gornyhuy 05-27-2004 06:20 AM

Shit!
I remember standing about 20 feet up on a wobbly ladder at an awkward angle to get the fan over my bed installed - if that fucker came down it would have some SERIOUS momentum behind it. Forget about the fact that its spinning fast and it weighs about 30 pounds....

:helpme

Ian 05-27-2004 07:51 AM

Lucky it didn't amputate your head.

Yuk,Yuk :1orglaugh

LadyMischief 05-27-2004 07:53 AM

Wow, glad to hear you're ok AMP. Fortunately I just checked and my ceiling fans seem pretty secure, but that's scary as hell.

ATL_Ryan 05-27-2004 07:53 AM

Buy a Hunter and you won't have problems.

blazin 05-27-2004 07:54 AM

Damn.... thats fucked.

Big reminder to myself to check that mine is secure - its a bit rickety and noisy

jackson 05-27-2004 07:57 AM

i always wondered if that ever happend to someone, i've seen a few that look like there ready to come down on someone there a bug out :1orglaugh

doober 05-27-2004 08:17 AM

Did the bolts loosen up and decide to give out today?

This is a good reason why i always check my fan here for loose bolts on it....Every 6 months or so i notice they start to loosen up a lil..nothing major bnut neglected for a long period of time ti would surely give out.

You can also use some Blue Loctite on those bolts to keep them secure, drip a bit on the threads wait 10 seconds screw it in and it should harden and lock the threads pretty nicely

Marcus Aurelius 05-27-2004 09:31 AM

Built mine in with a safety hook bolted up and over a floor board. The entire house could come down but the ceiling fan would still be attached to that floor board.

I hope youre ok tho...thats scary

OzMan 05-27-2004 10:59 AM

That happened to me about two weeks ago with the fan above the bed.

Luckily, I was out and came back to see a mangled fan and plaster all over the bed. You were lucky it didn't knock you out or cut you with the blades.

It had been wobbly/squeeky for quite a while and I never bothered to fix it.

I don't want to put it back up because like was said earlier it will always be in my head now that it is gonna fall again :)

Good thing it just hit you in the head, any other place may have hurt.

Make me wonder if the one over my bed is going to fall.

That happened to a friend who moved into an apartment I lived in before her. Yikes! It was one of those cheapie Home Depot 12$ dome covers that sit flush with the ceiling. It just shattered all over the livingroom one day!

Amp, glad to hear you're ok. All my ceiling fans have lights on them.... geez now I have to get my man to check them all.

Monique Niccole 05-27-2004 11:55 AM

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago...except it was just the light portion that came unattached. Wires were hanging down and sparks flew out. Scary thing to have happen in the middle of the night.

Sosa 05-27-2004 11:57 AM

haha cool!

sinkiss 05-27-2004 12:03 PM

hope u really are ok amp!! sounds painful as hell.
this thread has definitely changed my mind about putting one over my bed. i will just keep the little one on my dresser that goes back and forth, back and forth :)

aimeesweet 05-27-2004 12:06 PM

Glad to hear you're still in one piece...

Vitasoy 05-27-2004 12:07 PM

Holy crap... I always dreaded those fans
