Sequence of phenomina
1) In a nuclear explosion, there is instantly a blinding flash of bluish-white light and ultraviolet light. The surrounded air is instantly heated to 18,000,000 F (or 10,000,000 C) and creates a fireball. The fireball generates radiant heat which travels at the speed of light.
2) The wave of heat is followed by a blast, in the form of a pressure wave moving at 1150 ft (350 meters) per second. Part of the wave us reflected up again by the ground. Where the reflected wave catches up with the original, the pressure is doubled and the 'mach wave' is formed.
3) The overpressure of the blast wave is followed by a negative pressure phase that draws winds of up to 620 mph (1078 kmh) into the destroyed area. This corresponds with the upward movement of the fireball and hot gases.
4) If the fireball has touched the ground, dirt and debris are sucked into the rising column of hot gases and smoke, and the familiar mushroom cloud is formed. The fireball will not neccerily touch the ground, as nuclear weapons are most effective when exploded in an "air burst" from 2000 to 50,000 ft (0.6 to 15.2 kmh) above the ground.
Here is the ammount of U-235 (plutonium or whatever they use now-a-days) and the effects it has.
11lbs = 9 kilotonnes of TNT
111lbs = 90 kilotonnes of TNT
220lbs = 1.8 megatonnes of TNT
1100lbs = 9 megatonnes of TNT
2200lbs = 18 megatones of TNT
The equivalent volume of TNT for an 18 megatonne blast would be 420,000,000 feet.
Here is the RAD levels and how harmfull they are. This is assuming a 10 megatonne bomb has exploded.
within 1 mile (1.6km) of the blast, radiation will reach 456,000 RADS.
0-25 RADS will have no effect on a human
100 RADS will cause slight nasuea and sickness. It will take 7 days to recover.
200 RADS causes definite blood cell damage, naseua. vomiting, diareha, hair loss, livid skin spots, fatigue, possible heart failure. 25% of people exposed to this will die within 30-60 days. It takes approximatly 40 days to recover.
400 RADS causes increased severity of the above symptoms. 50% of those exposed will die. Several weeks or months will be required to fully recover.
600 RADS causes severe forms of symptoms listed above. 75% exposed will die in 20-35 days.
800 RADS is almost a certain death sentance. All the above symptoms plus rapid malfunction of the circulatory and parts of the nervous system. 99% of those exposed will die within days.
1000+ RADS causes a very rapid onset of symptoms and death within hours. 100% exposed die.
