Bush's Warped Spending on War Instead of Homeland Security

interesting article...

http://www.businessweek.com/technolo...6600_tc148.htm

"MISPLACED PRIORITIES. Installing enough scanners to bring 100% screening capability to U.S. shipments traversing the world's 60 largest ports would cost $500 million to $600 million, less than the cost of a week's operations in Iraq. Extending the program to cover air cargo and other key means for moving goods would cost several billion more. Yet such a capability could provide far better visibility into U.S. transportation systems and their vulnerabilities to terrorist attacks.

"When you have no system of tracking things, then you end up with a crisis of confidence and a Draconian response if something goes wrong,"
says Steven Flynn, a transportation security expert with the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City."

its a republicans nature to help everyone BUT the people here in their own country. Couple that with the fact bush has an agenda for iraq that is only in his interest doesn't make it much easier to swallow either.

Ever since this bullshit homeland security crap was put into effect I feel less secure then I did before we had it

The fact that Hussein tried to surrender and Bush still decided to spend hundreds of billions of dollars killing people is fucking insane. What a hero.

agreed, but what is really sad is the best money spent is NOT being spent atm...

as mentioned we're doing the draconian shit...

the lack of spending on preventative shit in the first place (scanners, ground intel, etc) is what helped get us here in the first place....boy that redneck SHIRRR is not doing the right thing, unless he wants more attacks to keep himself in office...

I agree, and what's the only thing Bush is spending money to protect? You guessed it, oil companies. No I'm not joking.

Taxpayers Footing Oil Safety Bill

CBS)_It's no secret that when it comes to the mounting cost of security for all high-risk terrorist targets, like nuclear power plants and railroads, there simply isn't enough Homeland Security money to go around.

But, as CBS News Correspondent Mika Brzezinski reports, precious taxpayer dollars are quietly going to pay for security at some of the richest corporations in the world. Major oil companies have received $65 million to buy cameras, fencing, and communications equipment.

"That makes no sense to me at all," says Bill Millar, President of the American Public Transportation Association.

Millar asks why these profitable private companies are receiving scarce taxpayer dollars while publicly funded entities like the transit system, with Americans riding 32 million times a day, left under-funded and under-protected.

"Clearly, public transit is being short changed and security is not as strong as it could be," says Millar.

"We don't have unlimited resources," says Danielle Brian, the executive director of Project On Government Oversight. Brian cites the Bush administration's close ties with the oil industry and points out that these companies could well afford to pay for their own security.

"They're taking absolute advantage of the situation and the government is letting them get away with it," said Brian.

Case in point: Citgo made a $439 million profit but took $19.4 million in government grants. ConocoPhillips earned $4.7 billion in profits but received nearly $10.8 million. ChevronTexaco netted a whopping $7.2 billion profit but several of its facilities still got over $7.3 million in government handouts.
