Amazing technology. The next generation will be OLED displays and will be paper thin and crystal clear.

TOKYO - Seiko Epson, a leading inkjet printer maker, said it has developed the world's largest organic electro-luminescence display, which produces clear images while requiring little power.

"The company has developed an original inkjet process for depositing organic layers on large-size (thin film transistor) substrates," Seiko Epson Corp. said in a statement.

"Using this technology, Epson has now developed the world's largest, 40-inch diagonal, full-color (organic electro-luminescence) display prototype," the company said.

Seiko Epson plans to start selling products using the technology in 2007.

Organic electro-luminescence displays uses organic layers to illuminate themselves and consume less power than liquid crystal displays.

The displays offer high contrasts, wide viewing angles and fast response times -- characteristics required for the next-generation lightweight displays, the company said.

So is it for use as a lighted display like a sign, or are they talking something like a computer monitor?

BradM 05-23-2004 05:22 PM

That's amazing. I can't wait to see paperthin TVs so when I bump it, it tears in fucking two.

Basic_man 05-23-2004 05:24 PM

abyss_al 05-23-2004 05:24 PM

The day I can fold my 118" TV up and put it in my pocket is when I start worshipping tech companies.

Still, very cool product. This tech has been demo'd up to 40" at current methods, so its possible we'll be seeing it in consumer stuff sometime soon I guess.

The next generation of PC monitors. It'll be like a perfect glossy photo and as thin as normal paper stock. Unreal technology and only 30 months away to be on the shelves.

I can't wait to get some OLED pants.

I've been watching and waiting for oled's for a while now. I just heard that someone is planning to have 42" widescreen HD's for $999 just in time for the holiday shopping season.
