It bombed in the US, relative to cost... must have been huge in the third world countries.

RP Fade 05-23-2004 04:21 PM

I thought Ishtar was based on the big budget

SykkBoy 05-23-2004 04:24 PM

I actually liked that movie, but yeah, lost a chunk at the box office

FlyingIguana 05-23-2004 05:03 PM

another thing that looks bad. look at the most profitable moves and the least. new movies aren't very profitable while they litter the least profitable.

i think they need to adjust their marketing, cost structure, etc. plus they're just so many shitty movies out there today.

thatjen 05-23-2004 08:55 PM

That movie looks hideous! It's just as bad as the computerized scooby doo, or maybe worse.

I don't feel the same. That scooby movie sucked in my opinion and I don't feel the same about this Garfield movie. The previews looked promising.

I was watching Dinner For Five on IFC the other night...don't know if you're familiar with it but it's Jon Favreaus show where actors/directors etc sit around and talk over dinner.

Anyway Barry Pepper was on there discussing Battlefield Earth and how the show was only budgeted at $50mil but Travolta received like $20mil and they wanted the movie to look as though they had spent over $100mil...LOL

actually, with worldwide take and ancillaries, it made a profit...just didn't live up to expectations in the States.

eroswebmaster 05-23-2004 09:16 PM

I caught another documentary the other day about Carolco and Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna who back in the day were some of the biggest money spenders in Hollywood...created the whole summer blockbuster frenzy.

Anyway they spent $150 million on Cutthroat Island and it only made like $10 million at the box office.

The next project for Carolco was Independence Day and then Titanic...but because of some bad decisions they went out of biz....LOL

riosluts 05-23-2004 09:19 PM

the worst movie ever would be CULT OF FURY. some of the scenes from that movie were actual news broadcasts

eroswebmaster 05-23-2004 09:19 PM

These guys at Carolco were freaks...lol

They were the ones that dropped $3mil on Joe Esterhaz Basic Instinct script which was unheard of at the time.

Andif you ever read Hollywood by Bukowski these are the 2 producers he speaks of in there..one of the funniest parts in the book.

I love true hollywood stories.
