Laser Eye Surgery Update

Some of you wanted to be kept updated (because you were thinking of getting the surgery yourself) on my laser eye surgery recovery.

It's been a few months and I went for a checkup last week. Still seeing at 20/20 and eyes are healing nicely. No side effects, no problems.

I had the newer Custom Lasik surgery done, which I recommend if you're worried about your night vision (mine actually seems improved).

All in all, if you're thinking of getting this surgery done, I say go for it. At this point I barely remember what life was like wearing contacts and glasses every day.

Hey Rictor, how much does something like that cost?

baddog 05-21-2004 02:28 PM

that is great news, but not surprising. . . . . I know when I had mine done 20+ years ago it was the best thing I have ever had done medically

Now, if they could come up with something like that for curing farsightedness

I know someone I work with who had her eyes done, and she absolutely *loves* it. I'm seriously considering getting it done myself, although I'm not sure if PRK or LASIK will be my optimal choice (my pupils are quite large, which is what tends to cause the night vision problems and starburst/corona problems)

If you are 20/20 at a distance do you have trouble seeing your monitor now or other close items?

Was this the wavefront surgery?

Thinking about it...

Did the custom cost much more than $1k per eye? We have a large university hospital here in town and I'm trying to get into a study and get the surgery free of cost.

I've worn glasses since age 6 and don't like my face without specs. So regardless, I'll still have an assortment of frames. But to be able to see without them would be heaven.

I have really big eyes and pupils and I got the Lasik done. I absolutely love it and have had no problems at all. Your doc will be able to point you in the right direction for you though.
Good Luck

I don't have trouble seeing at any distance. This surgery is called Custom Lasik. It's a little more expensive than regualr Lasik.

I paid around $5k but you can get it done a lot cheaper.

I had it done in november 03 and it was also the best decision i ever made. I'll update this post in another 50 years if i go blind...mine cost $4800, minus $1000 for insured discount (this place gave a discount to those with insurance even though the insurance didn't pay a penny).

MONEY-SAVING TIP: i also setup a Section 125 prepaid medical plan so that i paid the remainder out of pretax dollars, essentially giving me another 37% off. so try and sign up for that if you can (ask your employer to set it up)

Thanks for the update...is there a min. age you should be when getting this? A friend of mine said his doctor told him to wait until he was 25

L0stMind 05-21-2004 04:10 PM

no min age. but they say that your eyesight should be stabilised for 5 years.

people like me, who never had glasses till I was 18, and my prescription got slightly worse at 22 (-1.5 in 1 eye, -0.75 in the other), should wait till our eyes have stabilised... otherwise there is a chance your eyes will degrade after the surgery is done...

and you can only have lasik once.
